Swedes held after Phnom Penh mini‑mart rampage

Two Swedish nationals have been arrested in Phnom Penh after a violent outburst at a convenience store left shelves smashed and goods destroyed.

Police say the incident took place on 13 May at LX Mart on Street 217, where witnesses reported a sudden rampage by the pair. Officers later tracked them down to a guesthouse on Street 172 in Chey Chumneah commune.

The suspects have been named as Christian Oberg, 45, and Malin Tilving, 42, both residents of a condominium in Stung Meanchey 3. They were taken into custody by the Phnom Penh Municipal Criminal Investigation Office, which is now preparing charges.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what triggered the disturbance, but video clips circulating online show extensive damage inside the store. Police confirmed that the two foreigners were detained without resistance and are being questioned.

The case adds to a string of incidents involving foreign nationals in Cambodia, though most recent headlines have centred on large‑scale scams and cybercrime operations. Here, however, the focus is on a straightforward act of vandalism that shocked staff and customers alike.

Officials say the matter will proceed to prosecution once the investigation is complete. For now, the two Swedes remain in custody as police gather evidence and statements.

This arrest highlights the growing scrutiny of foreign behaviour in Cambodia, where authorities are keen to show they will act firmly against disorder as well as organised crime.

One would think that the two mature Swedes, age 42 and 45 should know better.

Pay damage, pay fine, and deport (blacklist).

And please, don't come to Thailand.

Not sure being in custody in Cambodia is such a great idea. What a pair of dopes.

Ah, Street 172, what are the chances that drugs are involved? About 99%?
