Google Reinvents Search As AI Threatens To Kill The Web Browser

Google is making the biggest overhaul to its search engine in years — transforming the famous search bar into something far closer to an AI assistant than a traditional web browser.

The message from Silicon Valley is becoming unmistakable: the future of the internet may involve searching less, clicking less and letting artificial intelligence do the browsing for you.

At a major AI event this week, Google unveiled sweeping new upgrades to Search, Gemini and its wider AI ecosystem as it races to fend off growing threats from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The changes push Google further away from the classic “10 blue links” internet model that dominated the web for two decades.

The Search Bar Is Becoming An AI Agent

Google’s redesigned search experience now allows users to type longer, more conversational prompts — more like speaking to ChatGPT than using a search engine.

But the bigger shift is what happens after the search.

Google says users will be able to create autonomous AI “agents” that continuously monitor the web on their behalf.

Want to track apartment listings? Sneaker launches? Price changes? Sports announcements? The AI will watch for updates automatically without repeated searches from the user.

The company also demonstrated AI-generated mini apps and custom dashboards that can pull together weather, location data, fitness tracking and information from a user’s Google account.

In effect, Google is trying to evolve from a search engine into a persistent digital assistant that works in the background continuously.

Gemini Gets A ‘Spark’

Google is also expanding its AI assistant Google Gemini with a new autonomous mode called “Spark.”

The feature allows Gemini to carry out long-running tasks independently — scanning emails, monitoring bank statements, summarising documents and organising to-do lists across apps like Gmail, Docs and Slides.

Google says Spark will eventually connect with third-party apps as well, turning Gemini into something closer to a full-time AI operating system for daily life.

The company is also pushing AI deeper into Android and desktop computing through a feature called “Android Halo,” which allows AI agents to continue running even when devices are locked or closed.

The move appears aimed directly at the next frontier of AI competition: autonomous agents capable of performing tasks with minimal human supervision.

The War For The Future Of The Internet

The overhaul underscores how rapidly the tech industry’s balance of power is shifting.

For years, Google dominated the internet by organising information better than anyone else.

Now the challenge is different: AI companies increasingly want to replace the search process entirely.

Instead of users hunting for information manually, AI systems increasingly generate answers directly, summarise the web and perform actions on behalf of the user.

That creates a major threat not just to Google’s business model — but potentially to the wider structure of the web itself.

Publishers, websites and advertisers all depend on humans clicking links.

If AI agents handle the browsing instead, traffic patterns across the internet could fundamentally change.

Google’s High-Stakes AI Gamble

Despite its enormous reach, Google faces pressure from perceptions that rivals moved faster in the AI race.

Business adoption figures still place Anthropic and OpenAI ahead of Google in some areas of enterprise AI.

Still, Google retains one enormous advantage: scale.

Sundar Pichai says Gemini already has more than 900 million active users, while the company plans to spend up to $190 billion this year on AI infrastructure, chips and data centres.

At the heart of that push is Google DeepMind — the company’s elite AI lab many analysts describe as Google’s “secret weapon” in the escalating AI war.

The underlying ambition stretches far beyond better search results.

Like OpenAI and Meta, Google is ultimately chasing AGI — artificial general intelligence — systems theoretically capable of human-level reasoning across broad tasks.

Whether that future becomes revolutionary or deeply disruptive remains fiercely debated.

But one thing is increasingly clear: the familiar internet era built around browsers, search results and endless clicking is starting to disappear.

Gave using Google search a long time ago as it only gave answers that it wanted me to see, though other engines are much the same. So now they will be making decisions for you unless they present the information in a "for and against" format so you can make the decisions yourself.

I wonder if it was AI rather than woke staff that swapped the latest google maps of Bass's burnt out LA to the verdant pre fire images 2 weeks before the crucial mayoral election in another clear attempt to cheat in an election?
