Brit Tourist Critical After Pattaya Truck Fall

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

A British tourist is fighting for his life, after reportedly falling from a moving pickup truck and being run over in Pattaya. Ethan Lacey, 20, from Birmingham, who had taken two months off from his factory job to visit Thailand, is on life support at a hospital in Bangkok after suffering critical head injuries in the incident on May 16.

According to local reports, Ethan was travelling in the back of a pickup truck when he either fell or was thrown off during an argument, at a busy intersection in Pattaya. Local media reported that the truck’s rear wheel ran over his head, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Ethan’s family lost contact with him on May 15 while he was travelling across Thailand. Several days later, they discovered he was in intensive care after being alerted by a woman he was reportedly seeing in Thailand.

His grandmother, Anthea Chatwin, has launched a GoFundMe appeal to help cover mounting medical expenses and maintain his life support treatment. In an update shared on the fundraising page, she said doctors had told the family Ethan had a “30% chance of survival if kept on life support for 2 weeks”.

Ms Chatwin also shared details of the financial burden facing the family. She wrote that hospital costs were expected to reach between GBP800 and GBP1000 per day while Ethan remains in intensive care.

In an earlier update, Ms Chatwin explained how the family located Ethan. She wrote: “We located Ethan at 5:00am on the 19th May British time, via a girl he is seeing in Thailand, he is in the ICU.”

She added that Ethan’s travel insurance had expired before the accident. The family is now seeking donations to help pay medical costs and eventually return him to the UK.

Ethan’s mother, father and grandmother are understood to have travelled to Thailand to be at his bedside. At the time of reporting, more than GBP2,200 had been raised through the online appeal.

The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by tourists travelling in open-backed vehicles in Thailand, particularly in busy resort areas such as Pattaya. No further details about the circumstances of the crash or any police investigation have been released by authorities, who are still believed to still be searching for the pickup.

The Mirror reported that Doctors are expected to continue monitoring Ethan’s condition over the coming days and weeks, while his family remains in Thailand, hoping for the best.

Well, I’m glad that they had the time to rush over and be with him right now. 30% is better than no chance.

Unfortunately the Go Fund Me has been abused so much lately by people that aren’t making good decisions and doubt it will cover much. You never know, but why didn’t he get travel insurance to cover his whole trip, unless he just added time cause he loved it here and didn’t want to leave yet. Sad in any case. Wish we knew more about what exactly happened and if they have any leads. I don’t know if the drivers insurance would cover it considering it’s “ illegal “ to ride in the bed of a truck. If they had insurance at all or a license. I do hope they can find out more info and at least have an idea why this happened. Keep fighting kid. Prayers for all.

More the case of a 20 year old wanting to get out to see the world and cutting off the most important part of the finances.

The message is loud and clear: Thailand is dangerous. Just stay home in your 15 minute digital prison where you are safe.

Before he was located the family posted many appeals on Facebook saying this young lad is missing and he is married with a young baby and only visiting a family member and he is a good boy. After getting the predictable "yes he is probably with a girl etc etc", they started posting replies arguing with everyone. Now what happens everyone is right. He was with a girl and probably drunk and drugged up. Its a real shame but a predictable outcome.

Yet another disturbing case has emerged of a foreigner in the hospital after a serious vehicle incident, leaving a family back home with soaring medical expenses.

This case is especially troubling due to suggestions that Ethan may have been thrown from the vehicle during an argument.

The article also highlights the risks faced by tourists travelling in open-backed vehicles in Thailand.

This leads me to wonder whether standard travel insurance policies cover medical costs if a passenger is injured in a songthaew accident.

  • Popular Post

Another one from the "dumb"-brigade.

The #gofundme will follow

I have a hard time visualizing, falling of a truck (not songtaew ?) , right... you fall, but how can the back wheel, run over your head? run over by another car, ok

was he hanging out on the side with his head near the wheel ?

  • Popular Post

Guess you have to ask why he was doing in the back of a pickup. Even if he had travel insurance I think the claim would be denied.

Having insurance is one thing, but complying with the small print is another.

The sooner travel insurance is mandated for the full duration of a travelers stay in Thailand the better. If it expires during the trip then the individual should be considered on overstay. Just my view.

Anyway, hope he comes out of this ok health wise.

I wish him a full recovery. Hopefully it will just be a lesson learned.

My guess, even if he had insurance riding in back of pick up, or being thrown out insurance would find a clause not to pay.

Or may be the thai government could use their extra airport charges as insurance for these sort of eventualities.

  • Popular Post

This is exactly why the Thai Government is looking at making health insurance compulsory for all Foreigners. Medical costs unlikely to be fully met by the appeal and therefore absorbed by the Government.

There seems to so many cases on a regular basis, you can understand the reasoning.

The problem is that you can't insure for stupidity.

Well what can one say a incident involving a Brit plus no insurance cover plus a Gofundme appeal

It's probably a good idea not giving out 6o day visa to most countries. Back to the normal 30 days

Hopefully people can get insurance cover for the 30 days

You would have thought people read the news and know about Thailand.

check before you travel about Thailand and not having proper insurance cover

Could cost you big time

Ah, now if only the police stopped people riding in the back of pickups because it's illegal and dangerous and can result in life-threatening injury.

So you don't think the family should pay? better strangers pay on gobegme

Should not have been in the back of the pick-up. Insurance get out clause. Sorry no sympathy for tomfoolery.

Quick question.

He is in hospital accruing a hefty bill. What happens if he can't pay?

The insurance company would probably find an excuse not to pay anyhow. Alcohol, drugs, recklessness or something else. My friend fell off a balcony from the 32nd floor of a hotel, his life insurance company didn't pay anything to his widow as he was slightly drunk at the time of the accident.

And actually you don't need any insurance. Place the case into yellow press and trash TV and the money is coming like manna from heaven (sarcasm out)

Yes it's illegal to ride in the back of a pickup in Thailand, so whatever insurance he may have had would have been invalid. Hope he fully recovers

He might not have the chance to try to

They've probably already taken his passport, they are also withholding expensive treatment until they know it's paid for

My friend was hit by a car on Traphaya Rd 3 years ago, crossing with the pedestrian signal. 3 weeks in a coma, then he passed. He could have possibly been saved but his travel insurance company refused to clear the bill of the hospital he was in so he could not be transferred to a hospital with the equipment needed to treat his brain injuries.

He had a "Million Dollar" policy but they put up every roadblock possible. like demanding translated transcripts of all doctor interactions within 24 hours...virtually impossible. Of over $100,000 in hospital bills, the drivers govt insurance covered $5000 and the travel insurance $20,000. His family was stuck with the rest.

There is almost ZERO regulation of the travel insurance industry. Your local insurance laws don't apply in most cases as they are run through holding companies in the Cayman's and other nations with blind accounts.

Please tell anybody you know who will be traveling to do diligent research on any travel insurance company you plan to buy a policy from. Try to find user testimonials that seem genuine. See if they are registered with your state or provincial insurance division. For sure, the policy from a reputable company will cost more but it cost's more because they actually do what they promise.

Buy a discount insurance policy and you will likely get a discount experience when you need them.
