Purugganan's journey began in the Philippines, where he engaged in both academics and student journalism during the Marcos dictatorship. An alumnus of the University of the Philippines Diliman, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and served as features editor of the Philippine Collegian, known for its bold stance during challenging times. He furthered his education with a master's from Columbia and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.

During his interim leadership at NYU, Purugganan was praised for promoting interdisciplinary research initiatives in the social sciences and humanities. Colleagues acknowledge his reputation for advancing science, notably in biology and genetics. His appointment highlights the growing influence of Filipinos in global academia.

Looking ahead, Purugganan is expected to strengthen NYU's position in research excellence and address the dynamic needs of the student community. His leadership could set new standards in interdisciplinary academic collaboration.
