Ben-Gvir fury exposes the hard-line face of modern Israel

International outrage over a stunt by Israel’s national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has triggered a new diplomatic backlash against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government — and reignited debate over just how far Israel’s political centre has shifted to the right.

Ben-Gvir sparked condemnation after posting footage from a detention site holding activists from a Gaza aid flotilla. The video showed detainees kneeling with their hands restrained as Israel’s national anthem blasted in the background. Waving an Israeli flag, Ben-Gvir declared: “We are the landlords here.”

The reaction was swift. Western governments lined up to denounce the spectacle, with criticism extending from Europe to Washington.

Allies Turn on Netanyahu Minister

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she was “truly appalled” by the footage, while officials from France, Germany, Canada, Spain and several other countries formally criticised the incident.

Even the Trump administration broke ranks. US ambassador Mike Huckabee reportedly accused Ben-Gvir of betraying “the dignity of his nation”.

Netanyahu’s office also distanced itself from the video, insisting the display did not reflect “Israel’s values and norms”. Foreign minister Gideon Saar publicly rebuked Ben-Gvir, declaring: “You are not the face of Israel.”

But critics argue the opposite is true.

From Fringe Radical to Power Broker

Far from operating on the political margins, Ben-Gvir sits at the heart of Israel’s ruling coalition. As national security minister, he oversees police forces, prison systems and security policy across Israel and the occupied territories.

Under his tenure, rights groups have accused Israeli authorities of intensifying crackdowns on Palestinians, expanding armed settler networks and escalating pressure around Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious sites.

Ben-Gvir’s rise also reflects a broader transformation inside Israeli politics. Once associated with extremist movements rejected even by Israel’s right wing, figures aligned with his ideology now occupy senior cabinet posts and shape government policy.

Netanyahu’s Political Trap

The deeper problem for Netanyahu is political survival. Ben-Gvir and finance minister Bezalel Smotrich helped deliver the coalition keeping the prime minister in power.

That alliance has tied Netanyahu ever more tightly to hard-line nationalist forces as the Gaza war deepens international isolation and intensifies scrutiny of Israeli policy.

What once sat on the fringe of Israeli politics is now firmly embedded inside the state itself — and the diplomatic fallout is growing harder to contain.

Nobody better represents Israeli politics today than Itamar Ben-Gvir

The acid test will be if Bibi fires him. I'm betting not. His govt needs colonist living in the West Bank in his cabinet to prove its legitimacy.

The acid test was Nethanyahu forming a government with Ben-Gvir, he knew exactly what he was getting into bed with.

Yeah, he said he was trying to hand out water bottles to other detainees when a soldier pulled out a knife and slashed his hand between index and middle finger. Israel is clearly and completely unhinged now and needs to be given the label of pariah state and be cut off diplomatically and economically, just like the world did to the Apartheid-era governments in South Africa. Do it with or without the blessing of the United States and set up a blockade of Israeli exports, cancel all El Al flights from landing in other countries, etc. Boycott all Israeli exports. Like Canada's Carney said middle powers are strong if they band together and stand up to the powerful (like the US who would strongly oppose this - look the bully in the face and laugh at him). There can be no more excuses for this abusive regime. And no more hiding under the whinge of 'antisemitism' if such sanctions go forward.

I think it's well beyond time to start calling this for what it is, and push for international action against the Israeli regime. Seventy thousand (70,000) dead in the enclave of Gaza - which is by now pretty much scorched earth with no chance of native repopulation. The West Bank has violent right wing settlers out of control, killing, burning and confiscating Palestinian land - and the 'authorities' (like IDF) do nothing to stop it - maybe even help it along.

The worst part of this was that it was so unnecessary, So the flotilla wants to deliver food and meds. Let them. Would that really be the end of Israel's hegemony in the ME, to show compassion?

After this travesty, I'm betting the next int'l aid delivery gets through unimpeded. Israel is still slowing food, clean water and meds to a trickle. Punishment, pure and simple, encouraging the Arabs to leave.

The floatila had no foods and Meds with them .

Israel said any aid could be delivered, if they unloaded it at Askelon and Israel would then take it to Gaza , but there was no aid to deliver

BS, Nick. That was the whole purpose of the flotilla. Why would anyone give it to Israel, proven to starve Palestinians and have IDF target practice at water queues?

Its not BS .

Its been well documented there was minimal aid on the boats.

The EU is Israel's biggest trading partner and second largest arms supplier.

Terminate both until Israel rejoins civilised nations.

You mean like the USA just won? Israel has always been assisted by the USA. '67 too. So yes, I know something about the winning elements. Israel is small and easily targeted.

On the other hand, then we'd really see who the biggest terrorists are...

Its very much illegal to try to enter a Country without permission or visas , let alone try to break a legal military blockade of a Country at war

Are you drunken? Gaza is not a part of Israel.

Police the waters close to Crete? I think they are not.

They were heading towards Israel with the intention of illegally entering Israeli waters
