SCB ATM Udon Thani

Featured Replies

Using ATM card from Schwab Bank in the US, which I have done for the last 15 years with no issues.

SCB only allowed a 20,000 baht withdrawal and would not allow any additional withdrawals.

Exchange rate: 30.6

Went to Krungsri Bank and completed all of my ATM transactions without any issue.

Exchange rate: 32.8

Many of the Thai banks are putting crazy restrictions on our money. Krungsri (Japanese Bank offshoot) seem to be the least restrictive at the moment. Hope they keep it that way.

Did you accidently select the button to let SCB do the conversion? SCB will show a good conversion rate on screen, but they will deduct about 5.5% to 6.5% if you select to let them do the conversion. That works out to about 30.6 THB compared to the 32.8 rate you mentioned.

I hit the wrong button before, not paying attention. It's easy to do. Now, I always remember to select the "NO, Continue Without Conversion" button to avoid the extra 5.5% to 6.5% conversion fee.

Better open a new account at Krungsri before they wise up to the fact that farang account holders are a bunch of trouble just waiting to commit fraud.

Late last week, they were very busy and all over the news when Thai account holders had to get their app installed and complete more facial recognition malarkey in order to qualify for some cash handouts.

From the VISA exchange rate website... yesterday's rate for THB --> US$ was 32.47 which would have been in effect from about 7AM Thai time until 7AM today. Schwab should take out $615.95 from your account. They may show the ATM fee separate or include it in the amount withdrawn. I don't remember which way they do it.

Yes, my issue wasn't the exchange rate even though I included it.

SCB wouldn't allow me to make more than the one 20,000 baht transaction. That's the first time in 15 years that it has happened with my Schwab ATM card.

There are many possible explanations why you were limited to 20K. Most likely it was a decision SCB made. It could even have been something like the ATM was short on 1000 ฿ notes.

I've been a Schwab customer since '88. I once used my Schwab debit card to buy a 4k$ used GoldWing while I was on a 7 week bike tour of Eastern Canada/US.

I once used SCB in Udon to do a counter withdrawal using my credit card. The bastards charged me a 3% fee. Krungsri - zero fee. SCB one bank i will never use.

I closed my account there over 2 years ago when they stopped allowing online banking from computer.

Moved to Krungsri.

I just found an old pic of an SCB ATM screen I took just to show someone the two options. It's probably 18 mths old, so the Mark-Up fee is probably 5.5% to 6.5% now, and the Access fee is 250 baht. It's very misleading because they don't show you the net rate after deducting the Mark-Up fee. I always select the NO, Continue Without Conversion option to get the better VISA conversion rate using my Chase Bank debit card.SCB ATM - NO, without conversion.jpg

Oh…I miss 36 baht to the dollar. Maybe the fed will raise rates and restore arbitrage between the USD and THB.
