World Cup 2026 Begins Amid Visa Rows, Sky-High Prices

The 2026 World Cup was supposed to be a celebration of the world's most popular sport. Instead, as the tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada and Mexico, controversy is already overshadowing the action on the pitch.

With the US hosting 78 of the tournament's 104 matches, concerns over immigration controls, security checks, soaring ticket prices and political tensions have become impossible to ignore.

Ticket Prices Leave Fans Stunned

Supporters hoping to witness football's biggest event in person are discovering that tickets come at a staggering cost.

The tournament is the first World Cup to fully embrace dynamic pricing, allowing ticket costs to rise according to demand.

Opening match tickets were reportedly selling for more than $1,100, while some high-profile fixtures involving top-ranked nations exceeded $1,600 per seat.

Even lower-profile group-stage matches have seen entry prices running into hundreds of dollars, prompting criticism that ordinary supporters are being priced out of the tournament.

Visa Chaos Hits Teams And Officials

Just days before kick-off, Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to the United States despite holding valid travel documents and official FIFA accreditation.

Artan, who would have become the first Somali referee to officiate at a World Cup, was reportedly detained for hours before being sent back to Somalia. US officials cited security concerns linked to America's near-total travel ban on Somalia.

Iran has faced similar problems. Although the national team was eventually granted visas, several support staff members were denied entry. Tehran had requested its matches be moved to Mexico due to security concerns but was initially refused.

Other teams, including Senegal and Uzbekistan, reportedly faced extensive security screenings upon arrival.

Travel Restrictions Cast Long Shadow

Fans from dozens of countries face major hurdles simply getting into the United States.

Strict visa requirements, extensive background checks and social media screening have raised concerns among civil liberties groups.

Several nations participating in the tournament are also subject to travel restrictions imposed by Washington, creating fears that some supporters may struggle to attend despite holding tickets.

Human rights organisations have warned visitors about the risk of detention, lengthy questioning and enhanced immigration checks.

Politics Overshadows The Beautiful Game

The political atmosphere surrounding the tournament has become impossible to separate from the football itself.

Protests erupted outside Mexico City's opening ceremony, while immigration enforcement remains a major concern for many supporters travelling to the United States.

Activists have also criticised FIFA for remaining largely silent on travel restrictions and immigration policies that affect players, officials and fans alike.

Football Takes Centre Stage — But Questions Remain

For millions of supporters around the world, the World Cup remains the greatest show in sport.

Yet as the first matches get underway, the tournament is already facing accusations that it is becoming one of the most expensive, restrictive and politically charged World Cups in history.

The football may still provide unforgettable moments. But for many fans, getting through the gates could prove almost as difficult as winning the trophy itself.
