International Driving Permits for Long-Term Car Rental – Issues?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I am planning an 85-day car rental trip in Thailand starting November 2026. I am a EU citizen holding both my national driving license and an International Driving Permit, valid 3 years. I don't plan to get a Thai driving licence or to buy a Thai car.

What about these two differing internat. driving licences:

  • The 3-Year IDP (1968 Convention): I currently hold the grey, 3-year International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention (flabby booklet)

  • The 1-Year IDP (1949 Convention): I was told that while Thailand ratified the 1968 convention, Thai traffic law and local insurance companies strictly require the 1-year IDP issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention for tourists.

My questions for non-Thai long-term renters in Thailand:

  1. Is it true that local police outside tourist hubs fine drivers holding the gray 3-year (1968) IDP because they only recognize the 1-year (1949) booklet?

  2. Most importantly: In an accident, do Thai car insurance companies (like the ones used by car rental companies) try to void the premium coverage if the driver only presents a 1968 (3-year) IDP instead of the 1949 (1-year) version? (I also have my national licence with me.)

Thanks for your experiences!
