There's a general saying amongst Thais that the further North you travel, the sweeter the people become....................Chiang Mai people are certainly some of the friendliest I've met..........................

Georgette, darl, I am not sure you are the right person to be conducting this study.

Every second topic you post is about strangers talking to you, looking at you, asking questions, sitting at your table, commenting on your luggage, asking about your nail polish, or generally failing to leave you alone.

Now suddenly you are looking for the friendliest town in Thailand.

For heaven’s sake, pick a lane, sister.

The ideal location for you appears to be a place where everyone is extremely friendly but also never speaks to you.

A sort of socially advanced village where people wave from a safe distance, admire your high viz vest, respect your toothpaste analysis work, acknowledge you are on an important data collection mission, and then immediately bugger off before conversation becomes necessary.

I suspect if you moved to the friendliest village in Thailand, by day three there would be a new topic.

“Why do all these friendly people keep saying hello to me?”

Then another.

“Why can’t people in my village simply leave other people alone?”

Then another.

“Extroverts need boundaries. Too much friendliness is no good.”

Personally I think the friendliest place for you would be a small island with three residents.

One retired bookshop owner.

One ladyboy, maybe two just in case extra assistance is required.

And one sweaty expat in a Chang singlet living quietly in a one bedroom dump at least 300 meters away.

That gives you enough people for statistical analysis without becoming overwhelmed by unnecessary social interaction.

Perfect balance, girlfriend.

Friendly enough to observe.

Not friendly enough to actually interact.

To be fair, the bookstore guy died.

Possibly from tedium.

In fact, the real irony is I think he died a couple of years before Boy George even made that post.

Anyway, hopefully won't be too hard to find another retired book shop owner willing to live with Khun Darl on Fantasy Island.

No they are not! Local folks up here are unwelcoming rude and spiteful, so don’t even bother coming up here and wasting your time and just stay and go southward.

If they wear exotic headgear, they may as well just go whole hog and just be Muslims.

So the same as England then.

I believe he called for a national day of mourning.

He was silent on the topic of whether or not he ever bought a book from the man.

Hmm... In order to be the recipient of friendliness doesn't one have to be outwardly friendly oneself?

Walking around Makro with a face as long as a rainy day will not elicit friendliness from other farangs wandering around.

Sitting alone in a bar/restaurant nursing a pint will also not make the grade.

At the risk of being repetitive; any town with a Hash House Harriers group is friendly for me; at least once a week. Miserable people who chose not to try? Well there is no helping some people.

If we had ever crossed paths in a Makro, then no doubt I looked you square in the eye and either tossed you a howdy, howzit or a hey-ya-how-ya-do’n.

I remember the first time my mother visited me in Bangkok. We were in Carrefour where I met her after I finished work and going down one aisle trying to find a farang import something or other she wanted for breakfast every day (routine... ) another farang walked towards us, trousers and shirt and clearly just finished work as well. She was straight in there, big smile and a "hello" to this guy who smiled and carried on. She said "how rude" and I thought about it and asked "do you say hello to every white face you see in Waitrose"? Don't think I have ever spoken out of the blue to some random in the super market just because they had white skin. I think the older I get though, the more I would appreciate spending time with other farangs as part of a wide friend group.

Friendliest town? I find all places are friendly. Not many people want aggro and are mean.

I am still wondering if GG ever really went to that bookshop at all. In the post that GG made on March 24 of this year he said the bookshop owner just died the day before he went to visit him. Excerpt from his post:

Unfortunately I just heard the news ,the bookshop owner passed away yesterday, the two long term customers of that Pattaya bookshop did too last week heart attack and accident , how the hell is that not a regret ?

Hi topic containing the above excerpt linked here:

But then someone posted the screenshot below from Facebook dated 16 March 2024 indicating that the guy died that day. So based on the date of the Facebook post, the guy appears to have died two years ago already, yet GG said on 24 March 2026 that he just died yesterday. Something is not right here. It seems like GG is telling porkies.

Yep, agree! Also, Pai was hill tribe, but the mass invasion has now made it Muslim territory. 😂

Don't know about the friendliest, but, have not been in an unfriendly town yet. I learned you usually receive what you project.

Maybe the towns, are not the problem coffee1

Bangkok. All of those taxis with signs saying I Love Farang just gives me the warm fuzzies -- why would they lie?

Edited by bendejo

It depends. For example, a mix of Thais and farangs as neighbours in Bangkok would be good - if you made the first approach each time you'd get to know one another. Generally speaking though, Thais are a bit shy around foreigners. I guess mostly because they can't speak English. Having said that, on average, I find Thais in Isan are quite friendly. They are more outgoing than those in the North, they speak to strangers regularly, always laughing about some small thing in conversation. They are less shy around foreigners than those in other parts of the country. Aside from being labeled as bar girls - and of course many aren't - their sunny disposition in general is what draws many foreigners to them in marriage.

Thermae BKK, some friendlies 👍

Every place has friendly people. If you did a poll maybe Isaan would come out on top. (maybe)

I think that it is really up to one self. If you smile and is friendly to others, they will in return be friendly to you — i.e., the Buddhist saying that is: What you send out is what you get back.

I live in a southern island, a tourist destination, but the part where my home is can still be considered as a village. It seems like the local villagers accepts me so well that they wai me and say "sawadee ka/khrub khun Per"; many of them I don't even know their name. Also when I'm heading to the major tourist part of the island, just a smile from me makes almost everybody friendly. I shall add that I'm talking about locals — including expats — tourists seems not to care at all; perhaps they are too busy to just enjoy their holiday...☺️
