You need to enter your PIN in a UK ATM to validate the UK card

I have twice renewed my UK debit card - both times by entering the PIN in a Thai ATM.

That said, I have encountered a problem using it as a debit card. When I renewed my passport the bank refused the payment to the agency in Chiang Mai. When I contacted them they said it was flagged up as a suspicious transaction as it was made in Thailand. I asked them what address they held for me - an embarrassed silence and then, "oh yes, you live in Thailand"!

Precisely and frankly, it is total waste of plastic and tried the UK to enable it but they can not help and may try internet banking,, as have no direct mobile or landline.

You can activate in a chip and pin machine, buy something from Lotus or Big C. Also check the banks app or website, sometimes can activate there

Well that’s your problem right there. You need to get the mobile banking app.

You've teed me up beautifully to quote Darwin:

The older guys on this forum won't agree

Using mobile apps for banking, transport etc is an essential life skill in 2026. A person is free to dislike that fact but it changes nothing.

You most certainly can, and I speak from personal experience of being able to do this with my UK bank account. No VPN is needed in my case. And you can rest assured that no UK bank has, to the best of my knowledge, any plans to ram cumbersomely restrictive mobile banking apps down the throats of their account holders in place of internet banking, as has, sadly, happened here in Thailand.

I think you'll find the UK banks are waiting for digital ID to roll out before releasing their mobile payment app.

The Thais already have ID cards.

I am unable to see anything in the proposed Digital ID Scheme which is likely to impact how existing UK account holders may, in future, conduct their banking affairs:

Since the pandemic they've also increasingly encouraged the use of their credit and debit cards, as backed up by proportionate security measures, for making digital payments. A much more effective way of creating a cashless society than one which principally involves faffing around with erratic banking apps and hit-and-miss facial scans, I would have thought.

I dont know what all the fuss is about. In this day and age banking apps are essential. I conduct all my banking Thai and UK via the banking apps. They are easy to use and not cumbersome in my opinion. The only time I ever use online banking on my UK banking apps or credit cards is when there is a feature or transaction that needs to be done via online banking. You old boys who resist using apps need to get real and accept these are the way forward. Cashless society cant wait, the UK is getting there Thailand a way to go yet. At 70 myself I know and accept this.

I can’t even download my app as it is not” available in this country.”

Not in my case. It was activated via the phone APP, here in Thailand, last March.

Just remember one thing, banks or rather banking employees (customer level) are pretty much ignorant of technology. To support this just look and the UK Finance minister (Rachael Reeves). She cant even add up dates correctly. Her CV is testimony to that.

Try using VPN. 'A Double Diamond Works Wonders'.

Indeed, but in UK, they work alongside the existing online banking - they're not forced upon you as the Thai banks do.

Thai banks are more advanced than UK high street banks so I'd expect the UK to follow

I disagree - in UK there is more of an "ask the customer" philosophy even if they do encourage / cajole you to use the apps. The banks also monitor usage patterns - I think both will be with us for some considerable time.

Rather like cash - whilst many people in UK pay electronically, most retail outlets are happy to accept cash.
