Student dies at Cambodian waterfall

A 20‑year‑old IT student has died after being swept away by surging waters at a waterfall in Kampong Speu province, Cambodia.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon at Chreav waterfall in Taing Samrong village, Thpong district. The victim, Chhia Chhuy Kheang from Battambang province, had gone there with his girlfriend, Sot Srey Nich.

She told police that the pair climbed to the top of the waterfall to take photographs and bathe. Heavy rain suddenly caused the river to rise. They tried to cross but were forced back by the current. On a second attempt, Chhia was carried away. Despite efforts by bystanders to rescue him, he struck his head on a rock and died.

Police later confirmed a fatal head wound and returned his body to relatives for a traditional funeral.

Na Ny, the village head and president of the Chreav Waterfall Association, said visitors are warned daily about the risks, especially during the rainy season when water levels can rise sharply.

The tragedy underscores the dangers of Cambodia’s natural attractions during monsoon rains.

While waterfalls remain popular destinations, sudden downpours can transform them into hazardous torrents within minutes. Authorities continue to urge caution, reminding visitors that even familiar sites can become deadly in adverse weather.
