A Stick of DRAM, and Thou: When will prices return to normal?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Do you, ALSO, love Robert Browning?

"If thou tastest a crust of bread, thou tastest all the stars and all the heavens."

And, do you, ALSO, love cheap RAM?

I guess, by now, we all realize that the skyrocketing prices of RAM for phones, and DRAM for computer hardware, including SSD Storage, and PCIe 5.0 (Gen 5) NVMe M.2 SSD, and even RAM for our autos, is going BALLISTIC, and has been going that way, beginning about NINE MONTHS AGO…..October, 2025….

So, when will it all end?

When will prices fall back to what is reasonable?

Does anybody believe that the Sissy, Sam, will prevail in his misbegotten attempt to become something he dreamed about, since his childhood?

And, when he fails, will his house of cards come tumbling down?  Will Sam bite the dust?

And, when this happens, will the price of DRAM return to about normal?

Or, if the entire market drops out, will the price of DRAM actually crash?

Do you believe that NOTHING lasts forever? And if so, then would this not mean that memory-chip prices cannot stay at unsustainably super-high levels?

What will YOU do when the price of RAM begins to crash?...if it does….?

Will you buy a new computer?

Will you build a new computer?

Or, when the bubble crashes, if you are heavily invested, then will you have no money to buy more than a crust of bread?

Or, is the crash in Menlo Park just a temporary blip?

Here is an interesting vid from some Mexican guy, one of the Smart Mexican Guys, in fact, who seems to be very well-spoken, despite his heavy accent…..

Actually, I have NOTHING against Latinos, provided they are at least half as smart as THIS guy:

Someday, probably soon, everything will be back to normal…..

After the crash.

Don’t you think?

Best regards,

Gamma

Note:  I really enjoyed Metal Leo’s vid, today, about Menlo Park…..Good Job, Leo…!

Note: And, NO, I will NOT pay USD13.00 for a crust of bread, or a slice of toast….!!!!

Saw this problem getting worse late last year so I bought a new computer in January - the previous one was from 2019

My new one has 128 GB of RAM, a 4 TB M2 and 2 x 20 TB spinning drives, and an RTX 5070, and the best intel CPU money could buy for a consumer system like this.

Now I wasn't planning on buying this until the summer but as I saw SSD type and 'spinning rust' type HD drives along with RAM sky rocketing I bit the bullet and just ordered one.

It wasn't cheap - just over 200k Baht - but it was far cheaper than it would be now.

I'm glad I bought it when I did.

When will it return to normal - perhaps never, unless SpaceX really does get its 'gigafab' up and running - where they will be churning out their own RAM as well as GPUs - that will change the entire market.

Server RAM especially has gone through the roof.

Hard disks and motherboards in the truly capacity high end enterprise class have become a lottery to purchase if you want to but them in numbers - which people do as they tend to build large storage arrays. I must admit that in my business dealings in Europe I have accumulated about 40 of the 28 to 32 TB enterprise drives to cover our asses for the next 3 to 5 years - they're sitting there on a shelf in the hardware partners office right now along with all the other spares.

This is just the beginning, it will get far worse - inventory is almost non existent at country level distributors like Ingram and TD Synnex - they list future delivery expectations of 1000s of drives which when you look closer to the available day - they're gone - and you can't buy them in advance as pricing is not set until they arrive.

So even the promised supply as national distro level is pure fiction.

Gamma’s posts use more memory than my PC.

Started reading this when RAM was cheap. Finished it after prices doubled.

By the way: I did EXACTLY the same thing, even though I really did not need a new computer at the time, since I had 4, but...

I became worried that, given the situation, I might not be able to buy a new computer, at a reasonable price, or build one, in 2026, or 2027, or maybe even 2028, either.

The writing seemed to have been on the wall, at the time.

And, what we anticipated has been borne out by the events we are now witnessing.

Now, though, nobody seems to be able to predict what will happen next.

We can only predict, maybe: Things will not be good.

Bt200,000 for a computer! More money than sense.

UNTRUE.....!

He got a great deal by buying in 2025.

I would not buy the graphics card, however, yet he paid only USD549 for that.

No doubt, he got a great deal, compared to buying today.

He acted sensibly, so obviously.

The components he purchased will last five years, easy, and probably 10 years.

His computer is hardly a crust of bread, however...

When the AI bubble pops, memory/drives/motherboards will be dirt cheap. But your stock portfolio will be decimated and you still won't have enough money to buy...

A Bt200,000 computer. Why? Bit like buying a Bt60k phone. What's the point.

Bought my Dell XPS with 4tb installed last year and a 2tb scandisk ssd now double the price

I think the price increases must have something to do with drone manufacture.

Cheap. See this...

And that's with only 96 GB RAM, as all higher options got removed, I'm sure if 512 GB RAM option was still there, it would go over a million.

WAIT....!!!!

It's not a "scandisk".

I think you meant either SANDISK, which is a brand.

Or, did you mean SCAMDISK?

Please clarify.

With all the hysteria on Ai, the new kings of the roost are the chipmakers. Even Apple is loosing ground in the markets to the chip giants like Nvdia and Co. As usual, very foolishly, Europe has as usual put all it's eggs in the basket of Taiwan and Europe is far behind in this market.

lol, it was indeed a good deal. The last one I purchased with half the RAM and a lower spec CPU and GPU (2080ti) with less HD space cost about 250k in 2019.

I use my computers all day long every day and run all sorts of stuff on them including virtual machines, etc.

This was just for the box with Windows Pro on USB. I already had the monitors from before which I kept - and it will last me for another 5 years so I'm happy with this setup - plus I still have the old one which still works just fine.

Forget the whisky, because DRAMbuie is far better, by the dram.

I haven't seen Drambuie for sale at Makro, lately.

Where is COSTCO when we really need them?

O, bring back Carrefour.

And, I want WALMART in Thailand

If we had Costco and Walmart in Thailand, the food would be better, the quality would be better, and we could save enough money to pay the extra cost od DRAM, which is being driving up by Altman.

Whenever prices go up due to a shortage, production issues, refinery issues and things like that, when things return to normal they rarely ever go back to the previous level. Oil has gone down by nearly 50% in the past few months and yet how long how much is it gone down at the pump? There's likely a massive amount of profiteering that's going on in these various areas, and corporate greed will likely never stop.

Any excuse is good for the crooks of the industry to hike prices and they are fast into it. But much slower to decrease prices when the tensions apease.

What's your problem with not so smart Latinos? I think that they are well outnumbered by not so smart white US citizens, e.g., Those who voted for Trump.

The smarter ones are more worth the time to listen to.

Including the guy who did the YouTube video walk around Menlo Park.

Who knows, maybe he is from Spain or Nicaragua, and I would not know.

Soon. China will decimate AI companies with cheap models. Big tech like Microsoft and Google already giving up. They can't compete with cheap.

Let us hope so.

The sooner the better.

And, one more thing:

If you have any interest in listening the Indians tell the story...then.....

Their English is so terrible that you will not be able to understand a word of what they say, for the most part.

Indians, at least the Call-Center Indians, are totally unintellibible.

Thankfully, their jobs will soon be coming to an end, replaced by far more intelligent robots.

This will be such a blessing.
