    Can't be sure it applies to all countries, but I always thought an IDP was only valid for 3 months, if you home country driving licence is valid. Thailand being Thailand of course......

There - thats been answered well by others...

... You should easily be able to get your Certificate of Address (from your Local Immigration office) - and with that and couple of other Documents (medical)... you can use your UK License (if valid) to obtain a Two Year temporary Thai Driving licence - which after two years you extend by another 5 years.

That removes any ambiguity whatsoever as your legal status while driving here vs duration of stay etc.

Additionally - with a UK license - you do not need an IDP to assist with the 'conversion'.

Conversion, at Banglamung you still need do a test albeit not the full test.

Bangkok immigration at CW changed last year you can now get a COR on a tourist visa or visa exempt, takes 2 visits but is free.

every immigration its free

IN phuket town, come back in 4-5 days :-)
BUT if u want it now....get it in 20 minutes, its 500 baht
