Khamenei's Body Kept On Ice As Iran Prepares Delayed Farewell

More than four months after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed during Operation Epic Fury, Tehran is finally preparing for what it claims will be a historic state funeral on July 9 — with reports suggesting his body has been kept in cold storage while authorities organised an unprecedented national spectacle.

Body 'Likely Preserved In Cold Storage'

Counterterrorism experts say the lengthy delay has raised major questions because Islamic tradition normally requires burial as quickly as possible.

Dr Mohammed Omar told Fox News Digital that Khamenei's remains were almost certainly preserved by refrigeration rather than chemical embalming, which is generally forbidden under Islamic law. He added that special religious exemptions could easily be granted for someone of Khamenei's status.

He also suggested the damage caused by the U.S. bunker-busting strike may have left little suitable for public display, noting reports that some victims were only identified weeks later through DNA testing.

Regime Plans Massive Show Of Strength

Despite the delay, Iran is presenting the funeral as a demonstration of national unity and defiance under the slogan "We Must Avenge."

Officials claim as many as 20 million people could line the streets of Tehran for the July 6 funeral procession, with another ceremony taking place the following day in the holy city of Qom.

Authorities have declared public holidays, mobilised thousands of Basij militia members and Revolutionary Guard personnel, while state media says over 14,000 journalists and delegations from around 90 countries are expected to attend.

Security Operation Overshadows Funeral

Analysts say the enormous security operation reveals how concerned the regime remains about domestic unrest.

The same Basij forces organising the funeral were previously used to suppress anti-government protests across Iran, leading critics to argue the event is as much about projecting regime stability as mourning the country's former ruler.

Limited International Support

Although Iraq will send senior officials, many major powers are keeping their distance.

India, despite a personal invitation from President Masoud Pezeshkian to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will reportedly send only a lower-level delegation.

Observers say the modest international attendance reflects how isolated Tehran has become following the conflict and the weakening of Iran's regional influence.
