Flamingo revolution puts Albania PM under mounting pressure

What began as a campaign to protect flamingos has erupted into Albania's biggest wave of anti-government protests in years, with thousands gathering nightly outside Prime Minister Edi Rama's office to demand his resignation.

Sparked by concerns over a luxury resort planned near the protected Narta Lagoon, the demonstrations have widened into a broader revolt over corruption, living standards, public services and the country's political direction after 13 years of Socialist Party rule.

Environmental Row Ignites National Anger

The protests centre on plans for a luxury development near the flamingo habitat at Narta Lagoon, close to the coastal city of Vlora. The project involves international investors, including US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, whose consortium has received "special investor" status from the Albanian government.

Although ministers insist no planning permission has been granted and environmental assessments have yet to begin, reports of fencing and bulldozers appearing at the site have fuelled public suspicion.

Violence Turns Local Campaign Into National Movement

Public outrage intensified after footage showing private security guards assaulting a protester spread across social media. Rama has acknowledged the incident, transforming what had been a local environmental dispute into a nationwide movement.

Protesters now say the demonstrations are about far more than flamingos. Many point to struggling schools, underfunded hospitals, rising living costs and the steady departure of young Albanians seeking opportunities abroad.

Building Boom Faces Growing Scrutiny

Rama points to Tirana's dramatic redevelopment, a booming tourism sector and Albania's rapid progress towards European Union membership as evidence of success.

Critics, however, argue the country's glittering skyline masks deeper problems. Veteran writer and human rights activist Fatos Lubonja alleges organised crime, powerful oligarchs and political interests have benefited from the construction boom, calling for prosecutors to investigate major developments.

PM Defiant as Political Cracks Appear

Rama insists the protests demonstrate a functioning democracy and says Albania's strengthened anti-corruption institutions must operate independently, regardless of political consequences.

But pressure has intensified after several of his close allies became the subject of corruption investigations. Adding to the challenge, young MP Majana Koceku has quit the ruling Socialist Party, saying Rama has lost his ability to inspire and faces a growing crisis of legitimacy.

For now, neither side is backing down. Protesters continue filling Tirana's streets each evening, while Rama remains firmly in office, leaving Albania locked in an increasingly tense political stand-off.
