It’s not the hospital job to be mind readers - there was no immediate emergency and they were told the couple were going to make a short journey to a government hospital. They didn’t bother ,not considering it an emergency themselves.

I changed my opinion later in the topic.

The wife's cat caught one a few years ago. I guess about 6 inches long. The wife was going ballistic trying to hit it with a broom handle. How the cat didn't get bitten I don't know. But the if you have the reactions to kill a venomous snake a centipede shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I got the job of killing it using a heavy metal club hammer. Unfortunately I was only hitting the tail as the head and the tail looked the same. Sussed it out and finally dispatched it.

Centipedes sometimes come indoors in the rainy season when flooded out from their natural habitat such under fallen leaves, inside rotten logs, holes in the ground, etc.

As a poster mentioned, they enjoy hiding in shoes, a very nasty way to start the day if you don't look first.

Young children and babies are more vulnerable if bitten, being so much lighter.

Have a sturdy shoe or club handy to deal a fatal blow if you meet one inside or near your home.

I truly hate those creatures. Another reason I never wear flip flops or sandals

Usually when they bite they bite because they are hiding inside your shoes, Same with scorpions, They do not attack and bit you just because they think its fun, Only when trapped.

We had a huge one on our wall beside our house lest week, luckily it was dead, but must have died recently because when we removed it it was still flexible.

OK.

It was reasonable for both the hospital and couple to conclude that it wasn't a life-threatening emergency. They were both wrong. Things like that happen every day.

Yes, in case it's not clear enough already, I've changed my mind.

Ethical, intelligent people should feel free to change their mind when presented with new information or persuasive enough arguments.

I don't blame either the hospital or the couple for this tragedy.

I think this is the most fair assessment of what likely occured.
