I have used this system in PNG, but with a Philippino SIM card. You can also get Indonesian and Thai SIM cards. I don't know enough about sat phones to know if it matters which card you use - it worked well in PNG even though we were right at the edge of the satellite footprint.

Quick query regarding ACeS Sat phone- owners or anyone else in the know....

I have an ACeS sat phone purchased several years ago while I was working at sea off the coast of Myanmar.

Is anyone still using these?

Any improvements to the system?

If they are still a current model - any advice on retailers who stock either the phones themselves, the SIM cards for them, and/or the recharge vouchers for this system?

Just trying to work out what to do with the one I still have......

I had a Thai pre-paid ACEs phone for a few years and found it difficult picking up the sat on cloudy days or under tree cover.

Also it because a hassle topping it up after they closed their outlet at World Trade. Now I think you have to go out to Changwattana.

I switched to Iridium (pre paid) and it's much better and can sometimes use the phone inside the house if next to a window.

Iridium minutes are more expensive but can be reasonable if you buy them in large amounts (i'm talking about pre-paid).
