Jurassic Park star Sam Neill dies suddenly aged 78

Acclaimed actor Sam Neill, best known for starring in Jurassic Park, has died suddenly at the age of 78.

His family confirmed he passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones.

In a heartfelt statement, they said: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life."

The family added that although his death was sudden and unexpected, he had remained cancer free following his battle with a rare form of blood cancer.

Beloved star of stage and screen

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he emigrated with his family to New Zealand as a young child.

He later adopted the name "Sam" after using it as a school nickname, joking that there were simply too many Nigels in the playground.

Neill began his acting career in the 1970s before making his breakthrough in the New Zealand classic Sleeping Dogs.

Hollywood icon

He went on to become one of the world's most recognisable actors, appearing in a string of acclaimed films including Jurassic Park, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, The Horse Whisperer, and Jurassic Park III.

His portrayal of palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant made him a household name and secured his place as one of Hollywood's most respected leading men.

More recently, he won a new generation of fans as the ruthless Chester Campbell in the hit BBC drama Peaky Blinders.

Courageous cancer battle

In 2023, Neill revealed he had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.

Although the disease later went into remission, he continued receiving regular treatment while remaining active in film, television and public life.

That same year he published his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, offering an honest and often humorous account of both his remarkable career and his battle with cancer.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Sam Neill earned admiration from audiences around the world for his warmth, wit and remarkable versatility.

Tributes from fellow actors, filmmakers and fans are expected to pour in as the film industry mourns the loss of one of its most respected and enduring stars.
