I have been informed by my son in Farang Land that I will be a grandfather for the first time in the not too distant future :D

Wow, now I am going to feel old :o

But, the main reaon for posting is this :-

I am after ideas from people as to what they think I should buy for the baby. It would need to be something different and something typically Thai. The baby's mother is into Buddah, if that helps, and she has appreciated small Buddah related gifts received in the past. I would like the gift(s) to be long lasting if possible and not too gimmicky.

edit (forgot to say, though obvious, I would need to be able to carry it on the plane or in the suitcase along with my other luggage heheh)

When I get back home I can help with the usual baby requirements (though babysitting from Thailand will not be an easy task - thankfully!! - also a very cruel practice imho. LOL) so I would really like something different.

All suggetions will be considered, though knowing TV poster, I can see some being rejected out of hand :D

A packet of razor blades for that unwanted nuisance baby fuzz.

Cheers

PS congrats , and please accept my suggestion in the humor it was intended.

Go to Jatujak market at the weekend - you can get lots of crafts for babies and they're very cheap. Little straw birds for example or 20 baht. They're cheap to post s lightweight.

Take back one of those seats/racks to put in the bath. They cost about 100 baht from Carrefour or wherever and our vistors have been well-impressed. Stops the baby slipping under the water when washing.

ElectricNorth;

Yeah, i'd like to advise on gold or go along to your nearest temple and ask them for an amulet (not a Jatukham like!), would look groovy on a baby in Farangland!

Or how about, since the baby is half-Thai to get him prepared for later life life and send him a jar of chili paste, a few packs of Mama noodles?

Can't think of anything particularly ethnic in terms of baby care, but there is a baby fair going on at Queen Sirikit Center this week with good variety and savings to be had. Going in tomorrow to pick up a pair of car seats. The normally $1000+ Japanese car seat I've been after (by Combi) is going for 30% off.

Also, if you don't feel like hand carrying, you can just Fedex/UPS a gift and arrange it to arrive on the same day as you do... from babycenter dot com.

$1000 , wow! What's so special about it? Is it like an escape pod strapped to an ejection seat , with it's own airbags and such?

Don't laugh too hard. Baby seats are fricken expensive. 10,000B gets the basic hardbacked variety. Name brand - full option :D sets you back 30+K at Central.

As soundman mentioned, it's just a well built seat. I'm not too happy about the price, but the quality is there (it's not like a "brand" inflated price in some 'fashionable' clothes or some brands of watches for example) and figure divide the costs for the two seats by 2 since it'll go through 2 kids (at least).

I'll be a grandfather in a few months, and of course I wanted to get lots of stuff for the newborn. I wanted to bring some things over early in the month when I popped over for a few days, but my wife said it was bad luck to give a present till after the birth. So I'll wait until our return in January to bring and even purchase presents, bowing to my wifes superstitions.

Pegs for noses .... LOL ... been there and done my share of changing nappies, bottle feeding, baby walking when teething etc.

No one mentioned taking an Elephant??? You guys are slipping up here :o

Maybe a trip to the temple to look for something unusual might be the order of the day.

I'll look at those bath chairs too.

thx guys
