We had an absolutely wonderful time enjoying great food, wine and wonderful company. It's so close to Chiang Mai but a million miles away and we cannot recommend it highly enough for those wanting to get away for a few days. Had a cheese and bacon omlette for breakfast both days and was very satisfied. We visited number 2 (which is only half a mile down the road) for a Thai meal last night and that was also excellent. We have some particularly harrowing pictures of us having completed 'the nature trail', which turned out to be more of a jungle adventure and Rachel703's flipflops were not quite up to the job! Within two strides of Rachele leaving the road she had fallen down a hole and cut her leg but we carried on and puffed and panted up the mountain. Having finally made the summit we descended much faster, frequently on our posteriors. By the time we emerged at the Chiang Dao Cave Temple we looked like a couple of bedraggled mud wrestlers, much to the great amusement of the locals. We are clearly far more proficient at late night drinking than jungle trekking and will be sticking to our strengths in the future. I'll try to post some embarrassing pics tomorrow. Just gazing at those cloudy peaks charges my batteries to bursting. Yes, the farang food at the Nest is superb, but watch those prices. A superb contrast, with excellent Thai food at much lower prices, is Malee's Nature Bungalows, right next door! The Bungalows themselves are also cheaper and totally habitable. Malee herself, with fluent English (and good German) is a lovely person, deeply concerned about environmental matters up there. The Toxin government was hel_l bent on opening up a huge open cast lignite mine in the National Park north west of CD to feed that filthy power plant at Mae Moh near Lampang. The main road to Chiang Dao was NOT turned into a superhighway for tourism, oh no! Twenty-four hour convoys of huge trucks is why. Anyone going up there should avail themselves of Malee's cuisine and concern. And be ready to lay down in front of the bulldozers if the next lot try this one on again........! Malee herself, with fluent English (and good German) is a lovely person. I have been to Malee's bungalows a couple of times now and agree with your comments. She is a lovely lady and knows a lot about the surrounding area. The accomodation is more basic than the upscale farung places up there but very comfortable and yes cheaper. Her food is superb and worth the trip just to eat there. If people are looking for an indulgent getaway then I think the Chiang Dao Nest or similar are the way to go. Superb farung food and drink. However for a pleasant and cheaper weekend then Malee's bungalows would be my choice. A lot will depend on who you are going with. I know my g/f would prefer Malee's place simply because she would recognise and enjoy the Thai food. She doesn't drink alcohol so wine would be a waste on her, and she doesn't like farung food unless it is Pizza. Not sure if pizza here even comes under the classification of food. I think I must agree with the prices to stay overnight in most places . Actually there have been opened some other places as well lately , which have some cheaper prices available . I do not understand anyway why it so high , no need for . There are some other places where you can eat pretty reasonable .
