A Chinese doctor has been brutally murdered at her workplace in Phnom Penh, prompting Beijing to demand swift justice and stronger protection for its nationals in Cambodia.

The 47‑year‑old woman was attacked on Sunday at the Ziyun Clinic in Dangkor district, where she both worked and lived. Cambodian police arrested a 37‑year‑old local man the same day.

Investigators say the suspect and victim had no prior connection, though his family claims he has long suffered from mental illness. Authorities have not ruled this out but insist it must be confirmed through judicial evaluation.

Forensic examinations revealed the victim suffered 34 stab wounds. Police believe she was sexually assaulted before being killed, describing the case as a violent crime still under investigation. Multiple pieces of evidence were collected at the scene as officers work to establish a clear motive.

The Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh has urged Cambodian authorities to uncover the truth quickly, punish those responsible and ensure the safety of Chinese nationals. In a statement, the embassy said it had contacted the victim’s family, offered condolences and pledged full assistance with follow‑up arrangements. It also stressed that it would closely monitor the progress of the case.

Local police have promised to handle the matter in accordance with the law and to take measures to protect Chinese citizens living in Cambodia. The killing has sparked concern among the sizeable Chinese community in Phnom Penh, many of whom work in clinics, businesses and construction projects across the capital.

The incident comes at a sensitive time for Cambodia, which has sought to strengthen ties with Beijing through trade and investment. Ensuring the safety of foreign nationals is seen as crucial to maintaining confidence in the country’s security environment.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on establishing whether mental illness played a role in the attack and on ensuring justice is delivered. For now, the case stands as a grim reminder of the risks faced by foreign professionals working abroad and the importance of robust protections for expatriate communities.
