Meet the Johnsons: Is this some sort of Larry-David Satire?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Speaking of Alabama…

I just recently came across this YouTube Vid….from Alabama….

My first thought, of course, was that this just MUST be some sort of Larry David Satire piece.

What say you:

Also, if this keeps up, this satire I mean, then JingThing’s insistent refrain of having a PLAN-B seems ever more prescient, by the day.

What say you?

If the Americans from Alabama, and the Deep South, begin to populate Hua Hin, then will you be on your way out…..someday….soon?

I came to Asia, many years ago, to escape the continuing degradation of American Culture.

Asia is a big place, and I know that China is still China.

Yet, I wonder just how much longer Thailand will remain Thailand, IF Social-Media begins to entice pickanninies from the deep south ghettos who wish to escape the terrible conditions which we all know exist in the USA.

One cannot change reality, I guess, meaning that Thailand represents a far, far better place for families of Alabama to escape to.

Would YOU live in Alabama?

If you would not, then why would they?

Come to Thailand….!!!!

Someday, soon, Thailand will become just another Alabama….maybe….

Best regards,

Gamma

Note: Thailand is a country with only about 71.5 million people.  IF 10 million deep south people from America were to suddenly emigrate to Thailand, in order to escape the conditions in the deep south, then the impact might be immense.

Fortunately, China, with a population of over 1.4 Billion, faces no such risk.

Note2:  Who does not love Larry?

Good luck to the sweet Johnson family.

Sorry for them if they happen to read the bizarre post above including the passe racist slur.

Home schooling is not something that I'm a big fan of but clearly more economical than an international school here.

I think they may be a tad optimistic about how the DTV visa is going to work out for them for the full five years but again good luck to them.

Living in Alabama?

There are some interesting options there.

Huntsville, Florence, and the gulf port area perhaps.

Seems to me that Mrs. Johnson came to Thailand for brand-new kitchen appliances.

And, she seems particularly proud of her automatic dishwasher, too.

What is missing is any thoughts from her experssing her views about her love of Asia, or what really motivated her to come to Hua Hin.

For example, what is it, EXACTLY, that she so very much loves about Asia?

She seems to have neglected to mention any of her heartfelt values that drew her to Asia.

Was it the beauty of Thai script, and Thai language, for example?

Why, exactly, has she been so fascinated with Asia, throughtout most of her life?

This is what I would like to hear more about, rather than her brand-new dishwasher.

You are correct.

If they cannot afford the International Schools here, then do not come.

They came for the new and modern kitchen appliances, it seems.

I have a question for you.

Did you come to Asia to "escape" America?

Did you come to Asia for "cheap" living?

Or, did you come to Asia, as I did, drawn by a love of the Asian culture, the language, and some irrepressible affinity for living in Asia?

This is the distinction which I am pointing out.

Why are you in Asia?

I did not come to escape Pennsylvania, for sure.

I LOVE Lancaster, and the beauty of the land......

This is my point.

I don't know about racism, but reeks of classism. @GammaGlobulin , I would hope that you, a well-travelled man would be better than this. Then again, I think you grew up in New Hampshire (as did I), which I always think of as redneck land of the north sans the accent.

Let us be clear, can we?

My text reveals a localized sociological dispute regarding the taxonomy and legitimacy of expatriate migration.

In fact, this merely constitutes an ideological conflict over the valid parameters for transnational relocation, explicitly contrasting culturally motivated integration against economically driven lifestyle arbitrage.

Supporting Evidence

  • Motivation Dichotomy: The primary author, GammaGlobulin, constructs a strict framework dividing migrants into two distinct categories. The first category comprises individuals possessing an intrinsic affinity for the destination's culture and language. The second category comprises individuals seeking pure economic utility, disparagingly represented by an interest in "brand-new kitchen appliances" and "cheap living."

  • Socioeconomic Gatekeeping: GammaGlobulin leverages financial capacity as a baseline metric for migration legitimacy. The stated inability to finance local international schooling is presented as absolute grounds for exclusion.

  • Rhetorical Escalation and Ethnocentrism: The systemic critique incorporates explicit hostility. The author deploys a severe racial slur to characterize the incoming demographic from the American Deep South. The respondent, JingThing, immediately condemns this usage as a "passe racist slur" and the overall premise as "bizarre," establishing a direct interpersonal conflict over acceptable community discourse.

  • Ideological Contradiction: A structural paradox exists within the primary author's fundamental argument. GammaGlobulin claims motivation to escape the "continuing degradation of American Culture" while explicitly expressing reverence for traditional American agrarian geography ("I LOVE Lancaster, and the beauty of the land"). The author utilizes these idealized historical Western constructs as the baseline standard by which contemporary economic migrants are evaluated and subsequently invalidated.

Of course, there are contradictions here.

However, back in the day, there were almost ZERO contradictions of this kind.

One thing that most people do not appreciate:

There are many millions of families from America who might wish to come to Thailand, in order to enjoy BRAND-NEW KITCHENS, and pristine clean living quarters, at a fraction of the cost of what the price might be in Alabama.

But, if all of these families came to Thailand in search of a better life, then Thailand would cease to be Thaialnd.

And Thailand would VERY SOON become Alabama.....

If and when this happens, I have a Plan-B.

I have CHINA.

There is NO WAY, with China's huge population, that these migrants from America can significantly dilute the Chinese culture, with 1.4 billion Han Chinese in China.

However, Thailand, with only 65 million Thai people, should think twice.

Would you not say that I am correct?

Haha.....You are right about New Hampshire having its rednecks....

And, in fact, one grandmother of my good friend, way back when, often stated that Black People had "different juices"....a remark which would have us young guys rolling on the floor with mirth.

No, I am not a racist.

However, I do value culture, which is something I think should be preserved.

If we are to destroy all cultural diversity, just through homogenization, then our world will lose much.

Or, is it OK to preserve the threatened cultures of small tribal groups in the Amazon, but not the larger cultural groups which we once valued?

And, what about the culture of Japan, of 60 years ago, which has been totally devastated?

It is unstoppable: Within another few decades, our children will be living in a totally homogenized world.

Is this something that you look forward to?.....

Because, there are many people who do.

You know, Sir....

The main reason I came to Asia, of course, almost before you were born, was to study and do research.....relating to Asia.

I did NOT come to Asia to enjoy a washing machine, of which I had none, in the beginning.

I lived a Spartan life, initially, just because that was the type of life everyone was living, in Asia, in the early 1970s.

In other words, my main purpose for coming to Asia was.....ASIA.....and not a cheap kitchenette.

I could NOT contain my deep love of Asia, Asian languages, and Asian culture, even Confucian Culture, in some respects.

But now, it seems, almost anyone, meaning ANYONE and their brother, comes to Asia, and why?

Just to escape America?

Just to experience far lower-cost living?

WITHOUT any LOVE of Asia.....???

Is this right?

Because, if this is right then why not just go to Africa.....????

Right?

There is no REAL LOVE of Thailand, and no REAL LOVE of Asia among these economic immigrants.....IS THERE?

I am not saying that Africa is bad.

So, I am only saying, if you go to Africa, then you should LOVE Africa, and for no alterior economic motive......

Am I right????

i KNOW that I am right.

I have been in Asia for over 50 years.

But concerning Africa.....nobody sang it better than Toto......a white band......

What's wrong with Uganda, as a Plan-B, one wonders?

Nothing.....it's amazing......

English is spoken.

And, the culture might be MORE to your liking....depending......upon......

If you are not able to adjust to Asia, or know NOTHING about Asia.

Need we mention SATIRE, just one more time?

NOTE: WORD TO THE WISE:: Never underestimate the importance of CULTURE, compared to the importance of a new automatic dish-washing machine. Please, listen to these words. Culture is important. And, so is Culture Shock. If you do not LOVE Asia, then you really should NOT be here. ...... Please listen to me, Folks..... I speak the truth.

Yes, have my places in Thailand I will return to where no one like these folks exist, as well as the Ivanov's, Kuznetsov's, Cohen's, Zhangs. Thailand has lots of space, as Moe in the Three Stooges used to say, "spread out" !

Excuse me, but, I really do not think that this can be classified, in any way, as what you call gobbledygook:

"The primary author, GammaGlobulin, constructs a strict framework dividing migrants into two distinct categories. The second category comprises individuals seeking pure economic utility, disparagingly represented by an interest in "brand-new kitchen appliances" and "cheap living.""

This says it like it is, and this is just one, and one of several, key points.

I have, in this topic, been harping on the IMPORTANCE of one's affinity for the culture, as crucial to being able to last here in Asia.

I stand by this premise of mine.

Do you not agree?

If you do not agree, then how and why?

We see too many come here, then crash and burn.

I have been here since 1970.

So far, I have not yet crashed, and I am still alive.

WHY?

I will tell you why:

I love Asia.

Therefore, I am able to endure what many might not.

CAPISCE....???

When people come to Asia in search of cheaper kitchens, or cheaper housing, or cheaper anything, WITHOUT first having a love for Asia....then.....they will almost inevitably.....

Crash and Burn

I have seen many instances.....

And, I am the last man standing (among the many I have known)......

This is true, Folks.

50 years is a very long time.

=====================

Let us not underestimate the INTRINSIC motivations for coming here, rather than the EXTRINSIC reasons which dry up, quickly.

If you think you will come here for 5 years, then think about TEN times your 5 years.

The use of that term in pretty much the whole English-speaking world is racist. No ifs, not buts.
But one place it is not, is Papua New Guinea. Sure, they speak over 800 different languages there but the pidgin English they use, "Tok Pisin" (Talk Pidgin) specifically uses the term "pikinini"- note the spelling as well - to reference a small child. A boy or a girl.

Use of the term pretty much anywhere else is actively being racist. It's not a term that "accidentally" falls into one's vocabulary in this era.

Even in the early 1970's reading some well-known books of the 18th and 19th centuries (or having them read to you by a teacher) have that and other racist terms - and not just of those of Sub-Saharan African descent, but Asians as well - we were told they while that term was common when the book written, attitudes change. Sure, it wasn't said like that to a bunch of six and seven year-olds but you get my drift.
Under no uncertain terms were we to use those words. Letters home to parents sort of thing.

Anyone that uses it is knowingly being racist. Nobody cares if you were "born in a different time" any more. This isn't the late Victorian Boer War era. That's over 125 years ago. And even if you're eighty, you've had at least fifty years to adapt.

I think they might think it is OK.

But, back to the key point in this Topic, which should be clear, by now.....

One should NOT try to migrate, or emigrate, to Thailand for economic reasons.

One should not come here just to swap a kitchen in Alabama for a super new clean kitchen in Thailand.

There MUST be other reasons for coming here.

I would suggest several valid reasons:

a. Love of Asia

b. Love of Thai culture

c. Perhaps religious motivations

d. Other valid reasons, such as charitable reasons.

However, the wrong reasons might include:

a. A new rental house with all the modern appliances, at a fraction of the cost they can be had in Alabama

b. Home schooling (as you say)

b2. Children should be enrolled in the Thai school system in order to learn Thai, as soon as possible, and for the purpose of integration into the local society and culture.

c. Some plan to make the move longer term. Do they really hope to become members of their Thai community??? Or, not?

Why did they come to Thailand?

They have not said.

Are their ressons in line with a great wish to be part of the Thai culture?

If not, then.....why not....AFRICA....instead?

There is NO way they will be happy here, long term, unless their passions and interests are alligned with those of Asia and Thailand.

How could this be otherwise?

Or, maybe, they are just interested in an extended holiday?

What you do you think?

Why did YOU come here, by the way?

Note: I love that term.... DuFus.....

Haha...Thank you....!!!!!

Would you call their adorable children that word to thier face?

People can move to Thailand for any reason that they like if they are able to obtain legl entry and legal permission to stay.

Nothing to do with what some pompous f-rang thinks should be the required reasons.

Well, of course, I never referred to them as FARANG, which is a term that most (many) people on TV seem to object to.

So, am I logical, at least?

Am I?

Please Note: Although I do not consider myself to be PROUD of being a FARANG, yet I easily accept this accurate and descriptive term which applies to me.
