GOF Nabs 641 Illegal Migrants On Kelantan-Thai Border

KOTA BARU: Malaysia's General Operations Force (GOF) detained 641 illegal immigrants along the Kelantan stretch of the Malaysia-Thailand border in the first six months of this year, under an operation named Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan.

GOF Southeast Brigade commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the detainees, comprising 507 men and 134 women, came from ten countries. Myanmar nationals made up the largest group by far, at 428 people, followed by 73 Bangladeshis, 39 Indonesians, 38 Thais, 21 Chinese nationals, 19 Indians, 16 Nepalese, four Vietnamese, two Pakistanis and one Nigerian national.

How the crackdown works

Ahmad Radzi said the detentions were the result of sustained intelligence gathering and patrols targeting high-risk stretches of the border, where smuggling syndicates typically move people in small groups of two or three to avoid detection.

"All personnel on duty will detain any suspected individuals before conducting further investigations. Even if they move in small groups, their presence can still be detected," he said, adding that the tactic does not appear to be slowing enforcement efforts.

Relevance for travellers and expats

This operation targets undocumented economic migrants rather than tourists or Western expatriates, and there is no suggestion that foreign residents with valid passes are affected. Still, the figures are a useful signal for anyone living near or crossing the northern border.

Kelantan's frontier with Thailand, including crossings used by travellers heading to and from Sadao and Golok, has become a focus of intensified GOF and immigration patrols this year. Expats and long-term visitors who make regular land crossings, whether for visa runs or day trips, should expect more thorough checks and longer queues at these points as enforcement activity continues.

The wider crackdown also touches on a theme familiar to foreign residents across Malaysia: authorities have been increasingly vocal about targeting the syndicates behind both people-smuggling and the scam and fraud networks that frequently exploit weak border controls, tourist passes and rented properties to operate.

For most expats, the practical takeaway is limited to patience at border crossings rather than any change in visa obligations. But the scale of the operation, more than 600 people detained in six months in one state alone, underlines how seriously Malaysia is treating irregular migration this year, a stance that has also shaped recent tightening of enforcement against overstayers and pass violations nationwide.
