TNLA NAYPYITAW – The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has become the first ethnic resistance force to join the military regime’s 100‑day peace plan, marking a significant shift in Myanmar’s conflict landscape. The TNLA, part of the Brotherhood Alliance that spearheaded the 2023 Operation 1027 offensive, met regime negotiators in Naypyitaw on Sunday. Talks were chaired by Lieutenant General Yar Pyae of the National Solidarity and Peace Negotiation Committee, with TNLA vice chair Tarr Jode Jarr representing the group. The meeting followed reports of Chinese pressure on ethnic armies along its border to comply with the regime’s ultimatum. Beijing has been pushing for ceasefires and dialogue to stabilise northern Shan and Kachin states, where cross‑border tensions risk spilling over. Leaked minutes suggest the TNLA demanded recognition of a self‑administered Ta’ang State, pledging to engage in the peace process if its role in local development is acknowledged. The regime countered that a Palaung Self‑Administered Zone already exists, and that full statehood would require parliamentary approval. The TNLA’s battlefield gains during Operation 1027 were its most significant in a decade, capturing townships across Shan and Mandalay regions with support from the People’s Defence Force and other resistance groups. Yet mounting Chinese pressure forced the group to hand back territory in late 2025 and accept a ceasefire. Since then, the TNLA has drawn criticism for cooperating with the regime, including congratulating coup leader Min Aung Hlaing on his installation as president in April. The move sparked anger among its own Palaung community and resistance allies. Until now, the regime’s peace process had been limited to talks with allied militias and non‑combatant groups. The TNLA’s participation marks the first time a major ethnic revolutionary organisation has entered negotiations. Analysts believe other Brotherhood Alliance members may follow, under Beijing’s influence, to formalise territorial arrangements. For Min Aung Hlaing, the talks bolster his claim of legitimacy as he pushes ethnic armed organisations to join dialogue before a July 31 deadline.
