Warrant issued over Pattaya tennis coach killing

Featured Replies

Thai police have issued an arrest warrant for a former Myanmar employee over the killing of a 64-year-old former Thailand beach tennis player and sports club owner at his home in Nong Prue, Chon Buri.

The suspect, Mr Zaw Thet Lwin, 29, is believed to have travelled to Mae Sot district in Tak province, where police fear he may be preparing to leave Thailand.

Former employee named in murder warrant

The victim, known as "Coach Nat", was found dead at his residence in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, on 26 July. Police said he had been strangled and attacked with a knife.

On 28 July, Nong Prue police obtained a warrant from Pattaya Provincial Court for Mr Zaw Thet Lwin on a charge of murder.

Investigators said the suspect was a former employee of the victim who had been dismissed one to two weeks before the killing.

Police traced a transfer of 37,500 baht from the victim's iPad to Mr Zaw Thet Lwin's bank account at 4am on the day of the killing. The suspect then transferred a further 10,000 baht, which investigators believe may have been used to fund his escape.

CCTV footage tracks motorcycle escape

Provincial Police Region 2 deputy commissioner Major General Chokchai Ngamwong led the investigation which identified the financial transfers.

CCTV footage reportedly showed the suspect leaving the victim's house at 4.35am. He was seen riding a motorcycle to a room in Pattaya, where police believe he changed clothes, collected belongings and left in the early hours of the same morning.

Officers have seized the motorcycle for examination.

Investigators from Provincial Police Region 2 and Chon Buri police later tracked the suspect to Mae Sot, near Thailand's western border. Authorities are continuing efforts to locate him and return him to face legal proceedings before he can leave the country.
