Thailand creator boom exposes solo account risks

Thailand's creator economy is estimated to involve 9-11 million people, but many solo operators have no formal arrangements for control of their accounts, payments or digital assets if they become unable to manage them.

The issue has come into focus after the death of travel YouTuber Hlun Solo, whose legal name was Bowornthat Pengsuk. His family confirmed his death after losing contact with him while he was travelling alone in Georgia to produce content.

Thai embassy officials travelled to Tbilisi, met Georgian police and confirmed that all of his belongings had been accounted for. They are continuing to coordinate with Georgian authorities and his relatives to clarify the circumstances.

A large but informal industry

A Tellscore report and Thai market research institutions estimate that about 2 million people work as full-time creators, with a further 7-9 million part-time, nano or emerging creators.

Thailand has an estimated 300-500 mega-creator or celebrity accounts with at least one million followers. Their monthly income can range from 200,000 to 2 million baht from AdSense, in-stream advertising and sponsorships.

The macro category, covering accounts with 100,000 to one million followers, is estimated at 3,000-5,000 channels. Hlun Solo's YouTube channel was in this category, where estimated monthly earnings are 50,000-300,000 baht.

There are also an estimated 15,000-20,000 mid-tier accounts with 50,000-100,000 followers, earning an estimated 20,000-80,000 baht monthly.

Many larger creators operate through companies and production teams. However, a significant number of solo creators - particularly those making travel, personal vlog and lifestyle content - continue to use personal accounts rather than formal business structures.

Accounts can become a single point of failure

Thailand is estimated to have 8,000-12,000 established income-generating YouTube channels, often holding accumulated AdSense payments. Facebook has an estimated 15,000-25,000 prominent pages, where administrator rights are often tied to a creator's personal profile.

TikTok has the largest group, with an estimated 30,000-50,000 channels earning through short-form video, TikTok Shop and affiliate income held in platform wallets. Instagram has an estimated 10,000-15,000 significant creator accounts, mainly reliant on sponsorships and image-based promotions.

The concern is that passwords, two-factor authentication, email and financial services are often linked to one mobile phone. If it is lost, seized or inaccessible while travelling, both content and income can be disrupted.

For foreign creators living in Thailand, or Thailand-based creators working abroad, the same practical issue applies: personal platform and payment arrangements may leave families or business partners unable to access accounts if something happens to the owner.

Planning for digital assets

The report identified an information gap within families, especially where parents or older relatives may know only that a person makes online videos and not understand their intellectual property, passwords, AdSense accounts or income streams.

Most creators have not set up digital wills or account inheritance tools, including Google's Inactive Account Manager or Facebook's Legacy Contact. Without them, relatives may face lengthy legal processes and court orders while monetisation and account access are suspended or lost.
