Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has met with a senior representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the government confirmed on Monday, offering a rare glimpse of the Nobel laureate more than five years after her arrest. The 81‑year‑old, who was ousted in a military coup in February 2021, is serving a 27‑year sentence on charges her allies insist were politically motivated. Since then, her exact condition and whereabouts have been shrouded in secrecy, with no foreign envoy publicly granted access. Government spokeswoman Khine Khine Soe said Suu Kyi met Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s Resident Representative in Myanmar, at her residence in Naypyidaw. Photographs released by officials show her in traditional Burmese dress, seated in a sparsely furnished room. Another image depicts her cutting a birthday cake marked “Happy Birthday Aunty Suu 29.6.2026,” suggesting the meeting took place recently. Reuters was unable to independently verify the date or location of the pictures, but they provide the first public sighting of Suu Kyi since authorities announced in April that she had been moved to house arrest. That decision followed a military‑engineered election which installed former junta leader Min Aung Hlaing as president. Her sentence was reduced slightly under a prisoner amnesty, which also freed her ally, former president Win Myint. Yet requests from ASEAN and other governments to meet Suu Kyi have so far been rebuffed. The junta has repeatedly insisted she is in “good health,” though her son has said he has received little information and fears she could die without him knowing. For many in Myanmar and abroad, the meeting with the Red Cross marks a rare moment of visibility for a figure whose fate remains central to the country’s political crisis.
