Senate Republicans are increasingly concerned that President Donald Trump is becoming a political drag on their efforts to retain control of the chamber in the 2026 midterm elections, as they argue he keeps undermining their legislative agenda and complicates election messaging.

Several GOP senators said Trump’s repeated attacks on their ability to govern, alongside his refusal to drop a proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” compensation fund for MAGA allies, are feeding Democratic lines of attack about corruption. They also pointed to polling that shows Republican candidates lagging in battlegrounds and GOP-leaning states, underscoring what they see as the need to push back on Trump on key issues.

Political Polls Raise Stakes For Republicans

Republican leadership and senators cited new surveys showing candidates trailing Democratic challengers in North Carolina and in states with Republican leanings including Ohio, Iowa and Texas. The senators said the figures reflect vulnerabilities they believe could widen if Trump continues to dominate the agenda and campaign narrative.

One Republican senator, who asked not to be identified to discuss internal views, said Trump is widely viewed in the party as an escalating liability. The senator said even in states considered solidly Republican, lawmakers may face tight races.

The senator also noted concerns about several incumbents, including Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, where Trump previously won by a double-digit margin. Another focus is Sen. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, who is seeking re-election and could face independent challenger Dan Osborn. Trump won Nebraska by a large margin, but his job approval has fallen steadily, with the decline particularly pronounced among self-identified independents.

Other Republicans facing difficult elections include Sens. Susan Collins in Maine, Jon Husted in Ohio and Dan Sullivan in Alaska, with the senators attributing major headwinds to Trump’s low approval ratings.

Anti-Weaponization Fund Becomes Campaign Burden

Sen. Thom Tillis said Trump’s continued push to keep the $1.8 billion fund in place—designed to compensate MAGA allies prosecuted or investigated during the Biden administration—has become a “yoke” on Republican candidates. Tillis, who is retiring at the end of his term, argued the fund is hard for candidates to defend and will help Democrats frame Republicans as complicit.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department late Sunday rescinded the order that created the $1.8 billion fund after Tillis and Sen. John Cornyn warned they would block Blanche’s nomination to extend his term. The Justice Department said Blanche had told Congress, including through testimony and written answers, that the fund would not proceed, while Cornyn and Tillis said White House resistance had delayed efforts to permanently eliminate it.

Despite the settlement reached late at night, senators said Democrats have had time to prepare to use the proposal as an election weapon.

Tillis previously suggested that Republican Michael Whatley—seeking Tillis’s North Carolina seat—would benefit from distancing himself from Trump. Tillis said candidates should be able to speak openly if they believe the fund is a bad idea, pointing to what he said is broad opposition to it in North Carolina.

Trump, meanwhile, said on Saturday that he would intensify efforts to establish the fund and urged Senate Republicans to pass legislation to codify it. He also signalled he would keep Blanche in the acting attorney general role as he presses for the measure.

SAVE America Push And Senate Tension With Thune

Republican senators also criticised Trump’s demands that the Senate pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act before the 2026 election, despite saying it has little or no chance of becoming law. They warned that Trump’s comments risk demoralising the GOP base.

Some senators said Trump’s public criticism of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, alongside his broader frustration about the Senate’s performance, undercuts efforts to project congressional accomplishments to voters. Others said Trump’s rhetoric makes Thune’s job harder as he tries to manage internal party unity.

Sen. John Kennedy said Trump’s remarks were unhelpful at a time when Republicans control Congress. Sen. Lisa Murkowski similarly said harsh criticism does not aid Thune, arguing it worsens disruption within the conference and creates problems for the message Republicans are trying to deliver.

Cornyn said the push to cancel the August recess to debate SAVE America is likely to leave conservative voters disappointed, and he warned that some of the conflict could reduce turnout. He singled out Sen. Mike Lee for criticism and said he did not understand why Trump’s allies had escalated the fight over the anti-weaponization fund, which he said is likely to derail Blanche’s nomination.

Cornyn’s office said Cornyn and the Justice Department had reached an agreement to permanently terminate the fund and clarify that the audit settlement scope is limited to the plaintiffs, including the President, and the IRS.

Elsewhere, GOP lawmakers also criticised Trump’s call for taxpayer funding for a new White House ballroom, after Republicans removed $1 billion for the project from a $70 billion reconciliation package passed by the Senate in June.

The Hill asked the White House for comment on the senators’ concerns.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, who lost his primary earlier this year after Trump endorsed his opponent, defended Thune from Trump’s criticism. Cassidy said Trump could help by working within the party to win votes rather than blaming Senate Republicans for failing to pass bills, adding that focusing on legislation such as a farm bill would be better for both policy and politics.
