Irish Traveller Charged in Cambodia Drug Case

An Irish woman has been formally charged in Cambodia after authorities discovered more than 40kg of cannabis hidden in her luggage at Techo International Airport.

The 39‑year‑old was detained on 30 July while preparing to board a flight to Singapore.

Immigration officers inspecting her two suitcases uncovered 71 packages of marijuana weighing just over 40kg. She now faces charges of possession, trafficking and transport under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Control, which carries a minimum sentence of 20 years if convicted.

Police seized her passport and mobile phone alongside the drugs, before handing her over to the Anti‑Drug Police Department for further investigation. She has since been remanded to Kandal Provincial Prison pending trial.

The case highlights Cambodia’s growing role as a transit point for narcotics in the region. In recent months, authorities have reported several high‑profile arrests involving foreign nationals. In June, two Thai men were caught attempting to smuggle methamphetamine through Phnom Penh International Airport, while earlier this year a Chinese national was sentenced to life imprisonment for trafficking heroin.

Officials say the latest arrest underscores the government’s zero‑tolerance stance on drug smuggling, but critics argue that porous borders and corruption continue to fuel the trade.

For now, the Irish suspect joins a rising number of foreigners facing lengthy prison terms in Cambodia’s crackdown on narcotics — a reminder of the severe consequences for those caught in the country’s escalating war on drugs.
