I checked before coming to Thailand and was advised by Hargreaves Lansdown that you can keep the account. No additions to ISA allowed, can remains non taxable in UK.

Yes, Hargreaves Lansdown told me the same thing that I can keep my account and yes ISA retains the tax wrapper (no more contributions) as does the SIPP.

The issue is with ongoing trading on my account.

This is what Hargreaves Lansdown told me about ongoing Investments once I provided my overseas address and Thai TIN Number:

“When it comes to investing, I’m afraid you’ll no longer be able to buy new units in UK Authorised funds. You can check whether a fund (Unit Trust/ OEIC) is UK Authorised by viewing the Key Investor Information Document (KIID) which is available via the ‘Key Features and Documents’ tab of the relevant funds factsheet on our website. Please get in touch if you have trouble establishing whether a fund is a UK Authorised fund.

You won’t be required to sell any existing investments, including any existing units of UK Authorised funds, and can still purchase other investments in your account such as shares, investment trusts, ETF's, gilts and bonds.“

As I mentioned all of my Investments are in U.K. authorised funds.

Therefore, I cannot actively trade on my account using U.K. authorised funds as I cannot switch any of my investments into any other U.K. Authorised funds.

Hence, I have effectively been de-platformed by Hargreaves Lansdown.

Just tell them you don't have one, I believe this is an acceptable answer at least for a year or two but it depends on who you're talking to. They will know that unless you have a job that many count

  • Ahh well there be's the problem 😋 But seriously I believe it is quite easy to get a Thai TIN number although it may, as like a lot of things depend upon which province you live in.

  • NoDisplayName
    NoDisplayName

You have pink ID? Use that number.

Can you share which Investment Platform you use?

I use Barclays and know that they'll look to close my accounts if I tell them I'm Non UK Tax Resident, Irony being that it was they that made me Nom-UK Tax Resident 19 years ago & at that time advised me to use my Parent's address, which I've been doing eversince.

Currently Hargreaves Lansdown. Switching to Novia Global. Need a financial adviser to switch as Novia Global won’t deal direct.

Thanks, I'm slowly migrating over to Interactive Brokers (IKBR) and selling down my UK Situs assets by buying mainly ETFs domiciled in Ireland/Luxembourg as part of my longer term IHT planning (Non UK Situs assets are generally out of scope for IHT).

Haven't got around to it yet but they will accept an ISA transfer from Barclays, just trying to get my accounts with Barclays to the point where if they did suddenly close them I wouldn't have to rush to sell anything (E.g. IBKR doesn't support OEICs so I wouldn't be able to migrate my Royal London MMF across + I can't seem to find the 2 UK Gilts I hold but I do know that they have some UK Gilts on their platform).

Was very easy to set-up the account from Thailand, so easy I even set-up a seperate "Joint With Survivorship" account with my Thai partner so she could get immediate access to some of my Cash/Assets without having to wait for Probate to complete when I die.
