Cambodia’s Interior Minister has ordered a sweeping investigation after a deadly explosion in Pursat province left five police officers and security guards dead during a domestic violence intervention.

Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha, who also serves as Minister of the Interior, issued the directive late on Wednesday night, just hours after the attack in O Som commune, Veal Veng district. The suspect, described as a drug addict, detonated a bomb as officers attempted to arrest him, killing himself along with two police officers and three civilian guards. Another guard was seriously injured.

The incident unfolded when the suspect’s wife reported violent assault to local police. Lieutenant Colonel Som Ra led a team of seven officers and one civilian guard to intervene. As they tried to restrain the man, he triggered the device, causing the fatal blast.

Sar Sokha expressed condolences to the families of the victims and instructed national and provincial authorities to ensure proper funeral arrangements. He stressed that the tragedy highlighted the destructive impact of drugs, calling them “a killer and a terrible enemy for all of us.”

Pursat’s provincial governor, Khoy Rida, confirmed that the injured guard received emergency treatment locally before being transferred to Phnom Penh for specialist care.

The attack has shocked the community and raised urgent questions about how the suspect obtained explosives. Authorities are now focusing on tracing the source of the bomb and dismantling drug networks in the area.

This deadly confrontation underscores the growing challenge Cambodia faces in tackling drug abuse and related violence, with officials vowing to intensify efforts against traffickers and suppliers.

Would you like me to prepare a short sidebar piece highlighting Cambodia’s wider struggle with drug-related crime to give readers more context?
