Liverpool Protester Exposed as Judge Tears Into ‘Mob’ Attack

A Liverpool protester who claimed to be defending women and children has been condemned in court over his role in a violent demonstration outside a hotel housing asylum seekers. Robert Scott, 47, was told his record included domestic violence, assaults, harassment and repeated theft offences — while the judge highlighted that he has five children he does not look after.

‘Protecting women and girls’ claim ripped apart

Scott was among around 150 people who gathered outside the Richmond Hotel in Liverpool city centre on 9 June. Wearing a Union Jack as a cloak, he forced his way through the hotel doors as a crowd shouted abuse, including racially motivated insults, according to Judge David Swinnerton.

The disorder later moved through Bold Street. Scott was captured on CCTV stealing a Deliveroo bag from delivery riders near the Adelphi Hotel before posting footage celebrating the theft on TikTok.

Judge exposes the contradiction

At Liverpool Crown Court, Judge Swinnerton said the protest had been presented as an effort to protect women and girls from asylum seekers. But he highlighted Scott’s own history, telling him: “He has got domestic violence all over his record and five children he doesn't look after.”

Scott has 44 previous convictions for 72 offences dating back to 1993. The judge said his record included domestic violence, assaults, drug use, harassment, actual bodily harm and numerous theft offences.

‘Save our kids’ slogan takes another hit

A Facebook image linked to Scott showed the stolen bag alongside pictures of Henry Nowak, whose murder had sparked outrage and riots in Southampton, and carried the slogan “Save our kids”.

Judge Swinnerton said the Deliveroo theft was intended to taunt immigrants and people from minority ethnic backgrounds, adding that Scott appeared to have carried it out partly for online attention.

Court sends a warning after Liverpool disorder

Businesses told the court the incident had caused fear and anxiety and damaged confidence in the city’s visitor economy. The judge warned that images of mobs moving through Liverpool streets did nothing to promote tourism.

Scott pleaded guilty to criminal damage to the hotel door, costing £240, and theft. He apologised, saying: “I wish I never got involved.”

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, with 25 days of rehabilitation activity, 100 hours of unpaid work, a 12-month mental health treatment requirement and electronic monitoring.

Hundreds of migrants stranded in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta have taken to a city beach to demand asylum, as authorities struggle to cope with thousands who crossed from Morocco during a mass border surge.

‘We are also human’

Protesters gathered on Sunday carrying Spanish flags and signs reading “We don’t want to go back to Morocco” and “We are also human”. Many have been living in precarious conditions around El Trampolin beach, waiting for a route to mainland Europe.

“We’re sleeping next to the sea, with cold and bad smells. We’re suffering a lot,” said Ayoub Elarroud, from Morocco’s Tetouan. Earlier this week, Spain’s interior minister said irregular arrivals would generally not be permitted to remain in Ceuta or travel to mainland Spain, except in cases of extreme vulnerability.

Thousands remain trapped

An estimated 5,000 to 8,000 migrants are still in Ceuta after more than 72,000 people surged into the territory two weeks ago. Most subsequently returned voluntarily, but the remaining population has left the enclave’s limited resources under intense pressure.

Healthcare officials say staff are exhausted, with reports of infectious diarrhoea and scabies alongside rising injuries linked to violence. Health Minister Monica Garcia rejected claims that services had collapsed, but acknowledged significant pressure and warned against portraying migration itself as a health threat.

‘I’d rather die than return’

Many migrants say economic hardship drove their journeys. Mohammed Ouanzar, a 39-year-old automation specialist from Fez, said low wages had made it impossible to buy a home or start a family.

Others described far more perilous journeys. Emmanuel, an electrician from northeastern Nigeria, travelled for four months after his children stopped attending school because of kidnapping fears, while a Bangladeshi migrant described crossing multiple countries largely on foot and witnessing companions die of thirst.

For those still waiting, the uncertainty is becoming another ordeal. Ousmane, from Senegal, said he was seeking asylum after alleged persecution over his sexual orientation, but had received no response to his requests for help.

In Spain's Ceuta, hundreds of migrants stage protest and demand asylum
