Border complex shut after luggage security alert

Police temporarily closed part of the Bukit Kayu Hitam border complex after unattended luggage triggered a security alert, but a bomb disposal inspection found no explosives. The incident affected the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security complex near Malaysia's border with Thailand on Friday evening.

Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the pink suitcase was found at about 5.55pm in Block B of the immigration and customs inspection area. No one came forward to claim it.

Scan prompted specialist response

Customs personnel scanned the luggage and saw images that appeared to indicate possible drugs and explosive materials. Police then requested assistance from the Bomb Disposal Unit at Kedah Police Headquarters.

The specialist team arrived at 8.45pm and assessed the risks around the building before carrying out the neutralisation procedure. Mohd Radzi said protecting people at the complex was the priority throughout the operation.

Border complex closed for two hours

The ICQS complex was closed from 9.30pm until 11.30pm while officers dealt with the suitcase. The luggage was opened at 11pm and no explosive material was discovered.

A further search found clothes, oil in a container, a black hairdryer, shampoo and lotion. Police did not report finding the suspected drugs or explosives that had prompted the security response.

The incident ended without injury, but the temporary closure demonstrates how unattended baggage can disrupt operations at a heavily controlled international crossing. Travellers using Bukit Kayu Hitam should keep their luggage with them and follow instructions from immigration, customs and police personnel during any security incident.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

Foreign motorists and other travellers crossing between Malaysia and Thailand may face sudden delays when security concerns arise at the complex. Anyone planning a time-sensitive journey should allow extra time for immigration and customs procedures, particularly when travelling onward to an airport, bus connection or hotel booking.

Passengers should never leave bags unattended in inspection or public areas. If an item is lost, it should be reported immediately to staff rather than retrieved without guidance from officers managing the scene.
