Dam Discharges Leave Six Dead in Sagaing

At least six people have been killed and more than 10,000 forced to flee after floodwaters engulfed villages in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region.

Days of relentless monsoon rain combined with emergency releases from the Thapanzeik Dam spillway inundated over 50 settlements across Depayin and Taze townships. Local rescue teams reported that water levels rose so quickly that even the upper floors of two‑storey houses were submerged.

The dam, located in regime‑controlled Kyunhla Township, lies north of the affected areas. Its discharges intensified flooding in townships partly controlled by People’s Defense Force units aligned with the National Unity Government. These groups have led rescue operations, providing medical aid and evacuating vulnerable residents.

“We are moving elderly people and those in poor health. Water levels are rising rapidly,” one PDF member told DVB, describing the scale of the disaster.

Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall will continue across Sagaing, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Yangon and lower Myanmar in the coming days. Communities along riverbanks and near reservoirs have been urged to prepare for further surges.

The Sagaing floods highlight the growing risks posed by extreme monsoon weather and sudden dam discharges. For thousands now displaced, the immediate struggle is survival amid rising waters, while the longer‑term challenge is preventing such cascading disasters from striking again.
