Sorry. Did not mean to deflect. The reason Germans did not defect to the DDR after the Wall came down is...because they didn't need to--the Wall was down! On both sides, the German people wanted family reunification, just like N&S Vietnam, Korea.

Of the Communist nations, the DDR seemed least attractive (except for the Trabant). Too much spycraft, too much surveillance. Drab & grey, with the USSR as its model.

No, I'm not. I never visited the DDR but have been to Halle where my son was doing a postdoc. Talked to lots of people about life in the DDR. There honestly did not seem to be much PTSD.
