Withdrawing forex profits in Thailand, picking a monthly amount & route

Getting money out of a trading account has become the easy part. Some broker withdrawal rails now clear in minutes rather than the two to ten business days a bank wire can take. For a trader living in Thailand, the harder questions are how much to take out each month, and which route the money should travel, because those two decisions touch margin, immigration paperwork and tax in ways a quick e-wallet transfer does not show you.

This guide covers the three decisions in order: the amount, the rail, and the record.

Set the amount from your life, not your equity

The common mistake is withdrawing a percentage of whatever the account made that month. Good months inflate spending, bad months force a choice between skipping income and thinning margin below what open positions need.

The steadier approach is a fixed monthly figure based on what life in Thailand actually costs you, reviewed quarterly. Price it in baht first, then convert at a conservative rate rather than the current one. USD/THB has moved through a range of roughly 33 to 34 over recent months, and a budget built at the friendly end of that range breaks when the rate visits the other end.

Whatever remains in the account after the withdrawal is trading capital. If the fixed figure regularly leaves too little margin to hold normal drawdowns, the account is funding a lifestyle it cannot yet support, and the honest fix is a smaller figure, not a bigger position.

The rails are faster than they were, but they are not interchangeable

Brokers now typically offer several withdrawal routes with very different speeds. HFM's withdraw money HFM page is a fair example of the current spread: bank wires from a $100 minimum taking two to ten business days depending on the correspondent bank, card withdrawals from $5 on a similar timeline, and alternative payment methods from $5 that process within 24 hours or instantly. Most brokers publish an equivalent table, and it is worth reading before you need it rather than after.

Speed is not the only property that matters, though, and for some residents it is not even the main one.

If you hold a retirement extension using the monthly income method, immigration wants to see at least 65,000 baht arriving in your Thai account every month, and offices generally expect those deposits to show as international transfers. A payment that arrives through a local intermediary or an e-wallet may not be coded the way your immigration office wants to see it. Anyone relying on trading income for the 65,000 baht method should confirm with their bank how a given route is coded before making it the regular one, because the fast rail and the visa-safe rail may not be the same rail.

The wire's two to ten days also argues for submitting the monthly withdrawal on a fixed date with room to spare, rather than when the account needs topping up at home. A request that leaves on the 25th, crosses a Thai public holiday and lands in the next calendar month is a nuisance for budgeting and a real problem for a visa file that needs a deposit in every month.

Keep the record as if someone will ask, because someone may

If you spend 180 days or more in Thailand in a calendar year, you are a Thai tax resident, and foreign income earned from 2024 onwards in a resident year is assessable when you bring it in. Monthly remittances are exactly the pattern the Revenue Department's rules are aimed at, so keep the confirmation, the amount, the rate and the date for every transfer. The same records double as the deposit history an immigration officer flips through at renewal time.

None of this is a reason to hold money at the broker indefinitely, which carries its own risks and leaves profits exposed to a rate you have not locked. It is a reason to treat the monthly withdrawal as a small system: a fixed amount sized to Thai costs, a rail chosen for how it lands rather than how fast it leaves, and a file that shows what happened.

Convenience got better. The decisions did not go away; they just moved further up the process.
