Malaysia deploys 606 emergency pumps for El Nino

Malaysia's Department of Irrigation and Drainage has positioned 606 portable emergency pumps nationwide as the country prepares for reduced rainfall and possible water shortages linked to El Nino. The equipment can be sent to affected areas within 24 hours.

Pumps ready for farms, water supply and fires

The department said the pumps would be used when river or dam levels fall to critical levels. They can channel water to agricultural areas and irrigation schemes, assist places facing supply disruptions and support forest and peatland firefighting operations.

Federal and state assets are being coordinated with the National Disaster Management Agency, while preventive maintenance is intended to keep the portable pumps and other water-control infrastructure ready before drought conditions intensify.

Lower rainfall forecast into early 2027

MetMalaysia's long-range outlook, updated on 29 July, forecast that El Nino would continue until early 2027. Lower rainfall is expected in several areas along the west, east and southern coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as central and western Sarawak and eastern Sabah.

The department is monitoring 56 dams and using real-time systems to track pumps, water gates and potential equipment problems. Its National Water Balance Management System provides water-availability projections up to two months ahead and early warnings up to 14 days in advance.

Foreign residents and long-stay visitors should watch announcements from their state water operator and local authorities, particularly in areas identified as vulnerable to lower rainfall. Keep a modest household supply of drinking water without stockpiling, check for scheduled disruptions before travel and follow restrictions on water use if they are introduced. Anyone managing a farm, business or property that depends heavily on water should review contingency arrangements before conditions worsen.
