I'm not sure if many people know but this company provides probably the cheapest way to call Thailand and from Thailand if you have a broadband connection and the person your calling has a land line or mobile/cell/hand phone.

voipdiscount currently allows free calls to Thailand. As we are in Thailand, we use this quite heavily and it works fine - but don't expect much support from them.

As for the blog - the expiry of balance is told to you up front, and quite frankly 120 days is very reasonable. The other three things I will be watching closely for.

only the free days expire after 120 days, after that you can still use your balance to call for .7p a minute which is still one of the cheapest around to thai mobiles and landlines from the UK

also note that the free minutes are set to 300 minute per rolling week, go over that and again it will be .7p/minute

quality is generally good

I gave up on betamax a while back as I've never been able to buy credit for ages - they discontinued credit card and paypal options and the only remaining option is a bank wire which costs a lot!

I grudgingly switched to Skype which i found has a cheap Thailand only plan and also a cheap int'l plan. In addition they gave me a phone number so now I have a local # in the USA which my family can dial, and Skype auto forwards the call to my mobile # (skype never needs to be running) -- all for free with the plan. Actually, I also added "google voice" into the mix, so now I've got voice mail and it auto transcribes and sends it to my email.

I got Google Voice too and find it very useful. It comes with free SMS too so I can send text messages to any person in US or Canada for free and I thinks it unlimited. In case they reply, I will get it right away in my little Google Voice chat box.

But I don't use Skype for paid voip calls. I got Onesuite prepaid VoIP service for that. I find their pay as you go pricing perfect for my needs and I don't pay anything if I don't use it.
