Jomtien - Krung Thai bank- in and out 800k important info

You must have additional a/c as joint account will be of little use for extension.

The green bank is Kasikorn.

The 4500k is for agent to assist with opening a/c however only possible if using agent for entire package

Yes, I've been using my BB, joint account with Thai wife at Jomtien for 15 years. Told then OK if you got 800,000 for yourself 800,000 for wife total 1,600,000, never have drawn from account today it stands triple that total.

With all the problems with BB, my wife likes Krungsiri I'm thinking after I do my next extension let it sit as required close and transfer it all to Krungsiri.

I don't do a Will or anything on my passing she just transfer to her own personal. Second, getting older and if bad luck I don't drop dead I would tab into the account for medical cost since caring for a close friend and family member getting a good wake up call on cost and how the private hospital work.

The amount I quote for original ops who referred as to why the 4500?

As I noted the agent quoted to my brother the 3 banks one can select from to use their money for the extension he has the green one with phone application. I myself thinking about freeing up all the money I have from the account in case for medical and pay the agent 15,000 Krungsiri to do the extension at some point, not getting younger.

Sounds like the Bangkok Bank shenanigans are about to spread to Krungthai Bank.

it had to do with the "ghost accounts" the bank got caught with which were linked to money laundering NOT agents banking the funds for their clients

If you already have a retirement visa / extension, opening a bank account should be zero baht

Not criticizing your set up however by way of contrast...

I'm not married and switched to income method which does not require funds to be locked into account.

As a result basically no need for will.

In any event do what works for you.

I certainly would not do what you outline re joint account 1.6m

Poor option in my thinking

Maybe I'm not explaining it well enough I don't consider my money locked in using income method whether I'm single or married.

Not sure what you mean by being single and money locked.

This money isn't needed although it is a joint account I don't consider it to be locked just because her name is on it. I have plenty coming in each month and she with my help built up a pretty large amount in her account.

The joint account is just a mental relief for her and my son to tie them over in thought if something does happen like getting sick need to pay hospital or my death expenses that she can access while the rest is being clear by my family back home.

If I do dropped dead it is automatically hers to use as she please personal I don't trust the law here or the bank I find everything I have set up here and back home to by pass any Will or Trust and probate. All my investment account once cleared will be forwarded to my love ones here. Meantime the longer I live the larger all these account become.

I had years to figure it out your entitle to your opinion I take no offense I've been here long enough seen enough I don't trust a lawyer or bank here as far as I can throw them.

Thanks for the input.

Or could be the mandatory insurance fee if >64.

What mandatory insurance fee? I opened a new, personal savings account at Kasikorn in Udon last week. No insurance or debit card fee and I'm 70. Maybe Krungsri or other branches does charge mandatory old geezer insurance?

I just remember when I was asking about assistance in opening a Bank Account for a friend of mine who was coming over & planning to do the conversion to Non-IMM O, they asked about how old he was & explained there would be a mandatory insurance if he was over 64. This would have been with Bangkok Bank at that time.

What planet is that from.

BBL out of blue required funds seasoned for 4 months in order to issue Bank Letter.

Nothing to do with agents.

Despicable conduct.

Are you sure about this? I know that back joint accounts get frozen as any asset of the deceased until the estate has been processed.

You should instruct your wife to transfer all funds to her own account before reporting your passing. Or better, before you die.

That is correct and many don't understand the rules re accounts when someone passes even with joint accounts.

Never listen to bank staff regarding this

It is exactly what it sounds like. Agent deposits funds needed for extension. Update bank book and get other needed bank documents. You return money to agent. Maybe there for 5-15 minutes.

I'm afaid your 'one hand show' lacks cred pal, they caused much anxt last year which still lingers today, locking accounts for many everyday Thais, not just expats.

Banks don't just invent stuff, there would have been something fishy about those accounts that would require scrutiny.

Thanks for the clarification. So, if I am right the only requirement waived by the IO are the seasoning periods? In case of inquiry they could claim partial ignorance: "he told us he just got the money from his mum, and was going leave it there for ever"..

Now, while I was typing another post I thought that maybe it was wrong to think that this visa scheme could follow the path of the nominee scam. There is one essential difference in that some people will become very rich from processing confiscated nominee property, while the government officials in the visa scam would just lose one modest stream of income. The motivation wouldn't be the same, and has nothing to do with :National interest"...

In my opinion the BBL action was everything to do with agents.

As I understand it BBL, at one branch in particular, had a large number of 'in and out' accounts opened by visa agents over a considerable period.

This was then noticed by the BOT who brought it to the attention of BBL head office as to possible money laundering.

This resulted in BBL action. (Heard that staff changes at one branch but just rumour)

As I just my opinion agree or disagree, no problem.

Will just add, had BBL accounts for many years.. no problems.

I appreciate your and Dr. concerns, I also have concerns which is the reason after all these years come up with my own system as indicated a few of you feel it is a misguided method my opinion for you who truly believe in the system I feel that is naive and misguided in my world it doesn't happen they way it is written especially here in Thailand.

Dr. feels my money is locked I don't feel that way! at all I feel your money is locked even if you have a Will keeping 800,000 in only your name, what if you were to drop dead, what would happen if one got sick and needed to use some of that money? I sure everyone feels they have it covered, a Will, a friend, it only works whatever method one set up is when it actually happens.

My decision is based just on that, I seen guys with a Will and Trust, drawn up by lawyers when they need to execute the decision is not based on their own law but to the person running the office, a great example when one goes into Immigration like a box of chocalate one never knows we talk about it everyday here on the forum.

I seen first hand, a guy Thai wife dies he did and had all the right things done on paper but couldn't execute, had to travel a day back to their village, hired another lawyer, etc etc,, when that was done came back try to execute at the Land office, had to hire another lawyer, same with bank, in the States, you have the Will and Trust, Death Certificate, whatever you need is done here clerks, managers seem to control everything the excuse I always gets is " policy has changed " but you go to another and it is different. To me policy is policy end of story!

So, based on my writing a few feels my joint account is nothing but that, but I've had it for years and TESTED it a number of times since it was opened. I had my wife walked in fill out a withdraw slip and took out large amounts she never has had a single problem a single question. All done while I was sitting in the waiting area with the deposit slip for the same amount as soon as she shows and passes the money to me. Did I or my wife have concerns prior yes but even now she doesn't any longer, as I noted I have also a ATM card, showed her how to take it out.

Yea, I have concerns like everyone about Thais, but I feel if any women can stay with me for over 20 years, deserves my assets LOL!

If those with concerns try to comprehend and not just say it is my choice then say something else contrary to that statement. I wouldn't have a problem needing to use the Bank method if it wasn't for the Embassy no longer issuing income letters because of a number of problems, others residents of other countries whining about the income not be verified, then the Joke of a cop who actually try to shake down certain Embassy for a cut.

This is my belief, for the U.S. Embassy all one had to do was go into their website and look at their appointment calendar, 90% of the time slots were for these so call income letter, the Embassy was raking in millions of baht each month. Whether one thinks it was right or wrong all it did was rob Peter to pay Paul, which are the agents.

So I started the 800,000 baht but as I get older and watching those around me drop like flies it is time to go to plan B, one has to put their trust in someone and it isn't going to be a Fing Thai Lawyer even a Farang one using a Nominee to open their practice. I have greater faith in a family member back home to do what is right.

I see no problem as to what I've done and been doing for the last ten years with my bank account but as I noted, it is time to free up the money and maybe use agent money for my extension 15,000 is a dropped in the bucket for me each year my concern not doing it yets is the constant changes, today one can't use BB, one switches, a year ago when it hit the fan, they went to Krungthai, and month later it was the Green, today is Krungthai, Green, and Krungsiri, maybe after I close BB, they end up going back. So I'm just waiting now until things calm down to make the move.

I have told my wife, if I die just go get the money it is no one business to know if I had died! My thoughts the less they know the better! LOL

Thanks fellas!

That is the problem when you hear things!

I recently opened a Krungsiri, a joint account with my Thai wife name, got an ATM card, assisted in downloading the banking application on my phone, wasn't even ask for a Residential certificate suprised! I noted I wanted to moved everything from Bangkok Bank to their bank because my wife like Krungsiri better already has two account there already. I also noted if I did am I going to have a problems locking of funds when it is time to ask for a Bank letter verifying my balance since I do my extension myself answer was NO, I was ask for now how much you want to put into the account I gave them a 1000 baht.

I like Krungsri - and have a few accounts with them (Thai baht and a couple FCD). One downside thou is a new policy of theirs to prevent online access to one's Krungsri personal account via a computer (PC) browser, for account holders age 70 and older. I read one is required instead (if impacted by that situation) to use one's mobile phone Krungsri app (and no longer can use one's PC browser). ... i don't know yet how much of this new restricted age-policy of Krungsri been implemented yet.

Thanks, I don't use online banking from a computer nor does my wife. With BB, it is simple old school just a ATM in which I pay monthly for the notice and yearly for the card.

I opened the Krungsri the same way difference I had them add it to my phone this is so when and if I start using an agent and their money they can use the application other than that I don't monitor or do business Thai account online.

Twice a year I go to a branch stick the book in and get it updated. Thanks

I am on a non imm O based on retirement and have my account with Bangkok Bank. Earlier this month I succesfully opened a second account with Krungsri (yellow bank) All good but I got a couple of curve balls on the way. Possibly only the practices of the branch in Chiang Mai but it may help if anyone plans to do this.

Sorry Sir can not open a new account if you are over 70. Handed over my passport and explained that I am still in my fifties!

Confirmation from mobile provider that my account is in my name. Easy enough, AIS is next to the bank.

Thai DL or long term lease were not accepted, had to be a CofR which is a pain in Chiang Mai and only free if you don't need it before Xmas.

Was asked for my address in home country. I do have one but can see that being a problem for others if they insist.

My National Insurance number (tax) in UK. I claimed not to have one and was not pressed.

Overall not too painful and I did get my account but was there for about 90 minutes and much stricter than when I first opened an account.

I was in soi 13/2 for the yearly retirement renewal and I heard that since today it is not possible anymore to use Krung Thai bank for in and out deposits. They will have a few days leniency but better be safe than sorry. Basically they will start freezing the amount for 90 days, so agents are not going to use Krung Thai bank anymore.

I also overheard that opening a bank account is 4500THB, don't know which bank.

Hope this helps someone.

Hope it helps stop this corrupt practice, all banks need to follow

Yep, Kasikorn won't allow foreigners to open new accounts with them these days unless they can provide current proof of a residential address back in their home countries! So that to all intents and purposes rules out every foreigner who has lived in Thailand for several years. Utterly unforgivable and despicable conduct on their part IMHO - and they are now definitely the pariahs of the Thai banking sector in my eyes for that very reason.

Banks are asking for an address in your home country but you do not need proof or evidence for that. At least not in my recent experience. Family address was ok in my case.

Kasikorn, at least, have this as a listed requirement for account opening;

"Government-issued identification documents from the contry (sic) of nationality, such as a national ID card, driver's license, and household registration."

I guess everyone has a national ID card or driver's license to show even if there is not your latest up to date residence address there. I was just asked to fill in an address in my home country. But I had to show evidence of my registered address in Thailand.

Edited by msbkk

Err, my two pennies worth:

I opened an account up with KBank last January. One requirement is definitely "Government-issued identification documents from the contry (sic) of nationality, such as a national ID card, driver's license, and household registration." There is a ✔️ box for the service clerk to acknowledge. Although I told her that I do not possess a home country address, she passed me the tablet and asked me to fill in a home address! I used my deceased parents address with no proof and she ticked the box.

This week I opened a SCB EZ e-account which also requires a home address. Same questions, same answers and same result! I am under the impression that being a long-term resident of Thailand (13 years) and in the possession of a 'yellow book & I.D. Card' oils the cogs, especially in branches away from touristy areas.

I have never had a problem with BBL in 13 years.
BBL for Fixed Deposit Acct (Immigration)
BBL for debit card (minimal use)
KBank for debit card daily use (I prefer their Banking App over others)
SCB EZ for a rainy day savings
All are instant access.
I transfer money into BBL & KBank using Wise with minimal fuss and no issues. If it takes an extra day or so, now and then, so what?

JMHO, I believe many people that have banking issues over-complicate things, after all, TIT! ☺️
Those that use agents for making life simple by doing the donkey work I can understand. Those that use agents for by-passing the financials are fraudsters, pure and simple, up to them.

From your excerpt, it isn't clear if that's for proof of home country address though, or just needed as secondary ID. Depending on one's home country, a valid driving license or ID card may or may not have a residential address on it.

Just give them an address. You really think they verify.

But, as for me I have a house in USA with car in the garage. Been living in thailand for more than several years. I did think it was odd.
