But, as for me I have a house in USA with car in the garage. Been living in thailand for more than several years. I did think it was odd.

You need proof of address. You can't just tell them a made up address. I had to show my U.K driving licence which they then photo copied.

Do UK driving licenses show your home address? My own license from Germany does not, just the city of issue.
