Six locations in Sarawak recorded unhealthy air quality on Thursday morning, led by Serian with an Air Pollutant Index reading of 187.

Readings across Sarawak

Malaysia’s air-quality monitoring system recorded API readings of 182 in Kuching, 174 in Sri Aman, 165 in Samarahan, 153 in Sarikei and 123 in Sibu as of 9am. Fifty other areas nationwide were at moderate levels, while 12 remained in the good range.

An API reading from 101 to 200 is classified as unhealthy. Readings above 200 are very unhealthy, while levels over 300 are hazardous.

Hourly monitoring

The data is released hourly from 68 monitoring stations nationwide. Conditions can change quickly, particularly during haze episodes and shifting weather patterns.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

Residents and visitors in affected areas should consider reducing prolonged outdoor activity, especially if they have respiratory conditions. Check the APIMS updates before exercise, outdoor excursions or long road journeys, and follow local health advice if symptoms develop.
