You misunderstand the Candian sentiment, nor Canada. If you think that the US can afford to have a hostile nation of 40 million on its border, you are deluded. Nor does Trump have much support from the US public.

You misunderstood my comment which was tongue in cheek.

Being serious, it is obviously not ideal for the US to have a hostile nation on its' doorstep, however, if you think that Canada can afford to make an enemy of its' neighbour - which happens to be the world's most powerful nation - then I 'm not the one who is deluded.

I just signed an executive order renaming America to Epsteinville.

No, it is not in Canada's best interest to have a trade dispute with the USA, but Canada has the resources to get through it. And although urban Canadians are as big baby as urban Americans, the Americans turn on each other, riot, loot and pillage during difficult times.

Once again Trump is doing Canada an indirect big favour, a nation building favour. It is ridiculous that the Canadians allowed foreigners to gain control of a large part of its economy. US and other foreign companies have been deciding Canadian carbon based energy policy for decades. Foreigners own much of the most lucrative parts of Canadian real estate, along with a large part of the manufacturing sector. Canadians need to take back control of their country, even if it means upsetting the USA.

That's the spirit! Once you get used to the new name "Lake America" you can even go holiday there, in the full appreciation of how the US have improved Canada. Provided you can get past the hordes of unemployed and homeless Carney is bestowing on Canada with his incompetence.

You obviously made a typo....surely you mean Trump and America. Just correcting your mistake.

Have you looked at the job creation in Canada v. the USA for the past 3 months?

May: Canada 87,800+ v. USA 46,000

June: Canada 18,200+ v. USA 57,000

July: Canada 75,100 v. USA (23,000)

Looks to me like Carney's economics are benefiting Canadians, while Trumps are hurting Americans.

The US economy is starting to tank. Canada added 126% more jobs than the USA and the USA is over 8X larger than Canada.

Tell us again what the trio of Bessent, Lutnick and convicted felon Navarro have done to create jobs and to improve the US economy. Navarro is singlehandedly trying to bring back pre-depression financial catastrophe while Lutnick the buffoon and his children antagonize and provoke the world's largest economies.

No I mean Carney is bestowing mass unemployment, falling Canadian dollar and lower GDP on Canada.

Have you looked at the job creation in Canada v. the USA for the past 3 months?

Yes, I have that slight blip is the result of Canada's job losses prior to the last 3 months. However, economists are forecasting that the job losses that are coming for Canada will be tremendous.

I'm not thrilled with Lutnick, though, I must admit.

The 'taking back control'/ 'short term pain for long term gain' argument was used to justify Brexit. It wasn't true in that context and it isn't true here.

I don't like Trump's use of tariffs to bully the US's trading partners any more than the next person; I think it a morally and, more importantly, economically unjustified policy as it also damages me US.

Nevertheless, the data speaks for itself. US exports account for 20 - 25% of Canada's GDP. Even allowing for re-exports, substitutions and other adjustments, it is inconceivable to believe that a trade war with the US will not have a significantly negative effect on the Canadian economy. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly deluded.

Yes it will. However, the vast majority of the 'massive' Canadian exports to the US, something like 70%, are misunderstood iwhen discussing this 'imbalanced trade' issue. Majority are energy related that the US really needs. So oil, gas, electricity, potash (a fertilizer - a main farming input). You'll notice there are no tariffs on those majority of commodities. But it will impact on manufacturing exports from Canada to the US (cars, furniture, wood products, steel, aluminium). So it's a case of Trump trying to have his cake and eat it too (after his Big Mac).

I don't think that there are too many 'Buts'. Nearly 50% of Canadian manufacturing output goes to the US. A trade war will have serious consequences for the Canadian economy.

That said, this is no way justifies Trump's tariff policy. Firstly, it is bullying protectionism; no more, no less. The claim that US exporters are victims of unfair competition has little, if any, validity. For example, in the case of Europe safety regulations, etc. apply equally to domestic producers.

Perhaps, more importantly, the policy hasn't had the desired effect: There has been no major re-location of manufacturing to the US and the imposition of (reciprocal) tariffs has done nothing more than push up inflation worldwide.

Trump appears to have taken on another of the Brexiters' favourite mantras: This will hurt you more than it hurts us; ignoring the fact that the pain can be avoided completely.

Exactly. The reason, of course, is the huge costs and time it takes to build a new manufacturing base from the ground up. We should all remember that the reason the big manufacturers took the chance and moved to Asia 30 years ago was because the costs of building new facilities there would be relatively quite low and the return after a few years of operation with cheap labor would be high. But now a CEO is being asked by Trump to move its manufacturing from Canada to the United States. It's a completely different scenario. The costs would be really high - higher than shareholders would agree, the wages at a US plant would be just as high or higher than Canada - so the operational costs would increase and profits and revenue would decrease. It's pretty straightforward for any experienced businessman (at least anyone who hasn't overseen nothing but bankrupticies in his career). So they will just wait him out.

Its quite obvious you are not an American. They are not happy, one more reason to dump Trump, starting with the midterms.

The verdict is in on Trump’s ‘Lake America’ and Canada trade war. It’s not good

President Donald Trump has dropped another clunker in the laps of his fellow Republicans in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections.

His new trade war with Canada and his related move to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” are the latest in a series of unpopular actions.

In fact, new polling suggests they’re even more unpopular than Trump’s previous tariffs and efforts to rename things.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll conducted in recent days is the first quality survey to test Trump’s renewed clash with Canada.

It shows Americans oppose the president’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” 63% to 14%, with the rest undecided.

That more than 4-to-1 margin is more lopsided than when Trump moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” last year. Back then, polls showed more than 7 in 10 Americans opposed it. But support was about twice as high, on average.

Well, at least you quote CNN, and not MSN, I suppose that's 2% less biased. Polls...Pfffft...As if a phenomenon like Trump cares for polls...That's for the likes of Kamala and Taylor Swift.
