The US is not going into a recession. But Canada will be.

Very soon.

Again.

You can thank Carney.

Trump supporters, are both ‘foreign and domestic’, I expect the former will stick with him and the damage he’s doing to the U.S.

They however don’t get to vote.

I doubt many of his American voters overseas do either.

Really, so what truth was it when Carlson interviewed Putin, or toured a Russian supermarket saying how great it was?

If the President is removed now, then automatically Vance is crowned President. He will have the right to present himself as for nomination as Republican Presidential candidate, but it would be a fairly incredible thing for him to seek nomination but not get it. You need to go back to 1952, and Alben Barkley, Truman's VP, being the example of a sitting VP seeking nomination by his party, failing to get it. Barkley failed due to age. Its never happened with a Republican party candidate. People mention Rubio as a contender, but unless he leaves the cabinet (by way of protest resignation), if there is an alternative to Vance in the Republican party, it will be someone outside of the current government.

If Vance is nominated, and is elected, he can't seek re-election if he became President before these coming mid-terms. He can seek a second term though if Trump is removed, stands down or other after these November elections.

The only way Vance will ever become president is if Trump kills himself, resigns, or is taken out. The man will never get elected, he is the very definition of an empty suit, he lacks charisma to an astonishing degree, and he's incredibly unlikable and incompetent.

I wouldn't underestimate JD's chances at the presidency. He's a bit of a shapeshifter. Remember when Trump was "America's Hitler"?

Oh I have no doubt that his vanity would compel him to give it a shot, but I don't think America would have any interest in such a lightweight who lacks humanity and charisma both.

The GOP is trying to figure out if MAGA survives without Trump, but the interesting question is whether the "Trump cult" is even transferable.

On the Dem side, the chaos is worse: Buttigieg, Newsom, AOC, Shapiro, Harris, and Beshear. "Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my!"

Pass the popcorn please.

Shapiro, Beshear and Kelly are likely the only viable candidates out there that could actually win an election. Harris should be excommunicated from the party and she should be very sternly reprimanded and told that she will never occupy another position of power in her lifetime.

AOC could be a viable candidate in 10 or 20 years but that remains to be seen. In my opinion Pete lost all his credibility when they gave tens of billions of dollars to the airlines and he didn't wrangle a concession out of them to not raise prices dramatically when covid ended. That was a huge failure as Transportation secretary and I still hold that against him.

Newsom is good looking, intelligent, and very articulate, and he outclasses Trump and Vance by at least 50 IQ points, but like Harris he's deeply unpopular in California and I don't think he's a viable candidate.

No question that the Dems have their work cut out for them, but Trump shoots himself in the foot daily, and is creating quite an opening.

GOP will win the Senate.

@scottiejohn I called the 24 election whilst soooo many on here were saying the cackling idiot would romp it in. My only mistake was I got the amount of electoral votes wrong. I was well under what he actually got. For the mid-terms I'm calling the GOP will end up with 52 seats in the Senate. Doubtful they'll keep the House majority.

The claim that JD Vance can become president only if Donald Trump resigns or dies is simply constitutionally wrong. Those are only two of several routes by which he could assume the presidency. Under the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, if the president is removed from office, dies or resigns, the vice president becomes president. Impeachment and conviction can therefore produce the same succession result. Vance will need only 12 votes to determine the President can no longer discharge his duties. And, quite separately, Vance is perfectly capable of seeking and winning the presidency in his own right. Being vice president does not somehow exhaust his constitutional eligibility to run for president.

Nor is the idea that Vance has never demonstrated electoral viability particularly convincing. He entered electoral politics by winning a competitive Republican Senate primary in Ohio in 2022 and then defeated Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan in the general election by roughly six percentage points, winning a statewide race in a major industrial state. 2.2 million people liked Vance more thanTim Ryan. He went from political outsider to elected United States senator to vice president of the United States in a remarkably short political career. That does not prove he will win a presidential election, but it makes the categorical assertion that he "will never get elected" look considerably more like partisan wishful thinking than political analysis.

The "empty suit" argument is equally difficult to sustain as an objective assessment. You've used some American slang that, typically, as an American, you expect the rest of the world to understand. I had to look up what this street clang meant; an "empty suit" is an idiom for a person in a high-ranking or authority position who looks professional and important, but completely lacks real skills, knowledge, or substance.

George W Bush might be considered to fit your "empty suit" definition. But as a politician, he was extraordinarily successful; twice elected Governor of Texas (the 8th largest economy in the world, considerably more significant than, say, Arkansas), and twice elected President of the United States. In political terms, there isn't much more than he could do. Yet being an "empty suit" didn't hold him back. John Major presented a cerebral figure, but he left school with no qualifications, yet ended up Chancellor then Prime Minister.

Vance is a Yale Law graduate, former Marine, author of Hillbilly Elegy, venture capitalist, former senator and now vice president. One may strongly disagree with his politics, rhetoric or judgment, but calling someone "incompetent" requires evidence of incompetence rather than simply disapproval of his ideological positions.

Indeed, his rapid advancement within the Republican Party demonstrates considerable political effectiveness: whatever one thinks of his methods, he has proved capable of winning a statewide election, establishing himself within the Trump movement (despite significant anti-Trump statements) and securing the vice-presidential nomination.

The claim about charisma is ultimately a matter of political taste, not constitutional or electoral fact. Vance plainly does not possess Trump's theatrical persona, but he does not need to. American presidents have succeeded with radically different political styles. A candidate can be cerebral, combative, disciplined, ideological, reassuring or charismatic in different ways. Harry Truman, John Major, Dwight Eisenhower, George HW Bush, Calvin Coolidge, were all successful politicians (success being elected to high office), yet lacked charisma. Vance's public persona is considerably more argumentative and intellectual than Trump's, and his political appeal is tied heavily to populist and nationalist arguments. Whether that appeal is sufficient for a presidential majority is an entirely legitimate question. Declaring in advance that it cannot possibly be is not.

Political careers are not determined by the personality judgements of their opponents. The relevant question is not whether someone finds Vance "incredibly unlikeable"; it is whether he can assemble a coalition large enough to win a Republican nomination and then an Electoral College majority. Maggie Thatcher, Richard Nixon, Tony Blair, Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill are all examples of unlikeable politicians who were, by some measure, successful. Churchill lost the 1945 election because people basically didn't like him. He won the 1951 election because people decided he was less unlikeable that Atlee proved to be.

As of 2026, Vance is already being discussed as a leading potential Republican presidential contender for 2028. One can reasonably argue that he would struggle to win a general election. But "he can only become president if Trump dies or resigns" is not a serious prediction. It ignores the Constitution, ignores his actual electoral record, and substitutes personal dislike for evidence.

If you are arguing that its impossible for Vance to become president because he's incompetent, unlikeable, and lacks charisma, then the interesting comparison is with George HW Bush. He wasn't a particularly likeable chap, apparently lacked understanding of complex issues, and was a dull as dishwater on the hustings. But he was elected as President, largely on the back of a charismatic but clearly declining President Reagan. Like Mondale, probably overplayed his war record too much. His son might have lacked charisma and competence (both arguably), but on a personal level, he seems a likeable bloke, able to laugh at himself. Interesting comparison to his brother Jeb, who is generally recognised as a very competent politician, but ultimately less successful.

Clearly money talks in US politics, with candidates of all colours boasting how much they have raised to essentially buy votes. Vance is likely in a pretty strong position to raise funds, due to his financial/investment experience and connections. Moreover, if he is the candidate to continue the Heritage Foundation Agenda, and if it's true that members of the wider Trump family have enriched themselves through corrupt practices (and now are even richer since the Patriarch has passed), he is the candidate most likely to keep them out of prison.

Obviously competence is not the only requirement for a politician. George W Bush was considered incompetent, but was elected twice to run Texas, a top ten economy globally, and elected twice as President. You need one of three qualities to be a successful politician; competence, charisma and likeability. Weakness in one can be compensated by the other 2 qualities. Charisma doesn't mean you are likeable. You can be a supremely competent individual, but if you can't get people to like you, or inspire others, you are less likely to be elected.

The lefties are going to be extremely disappointed when Vance is sworn in as president in 2029.

They have nobody to run against him.

The Dems are self destructing. The woke side saying WOKE.1 was too much 🤣 (wait for WOKE.2) and the DSA saying all the DSA things and now walking them back. Then you have the Islamists and immigration/open border crowd. Historically people don't get out to vote for mid-terms and historically mid-terms aren't great for a 2nd term POTUS but something tells me this mid-term is going to buck the trend. There is as you elude to a chance that the House can be held by the Republicans. I stand by my call on the Senate though, although it might be more than 52 seats.

What don't you get? I said on here Trump would win the 24 election. I gave an estimate on electoral votes Trump would win but he got much more than I was saying. I don't get it, you said you called it (wow, you had a 50-50 shot) because others were saying the cackling idiot would win. I explained that that doesn't make sense because the cackling idiot did win.

Trump will be voted out at some point and a new dawn will rise, whether the Dems or Republicans win.

No. I called a specific number of Electoral Collage votes and said Trump will win. As for your "(wow, you had a 50-50 shot)" this definitely wasn't the way MSM was predicting it or the cackling idiot's supporters on here. As for "the cackling idiot did win" this is simply puerile.

Wow! Trump can't be voted out. What are you talking about. As for a new dawn in 2028 the mid-terms will indicate what this new dawn might be. My guess is it won't be a Democrat run new dawn after the '28 election. JD Vance probably the nominee but Rubio is in the picture. Either one can run rings around anyone the Dems can put up for nomination.

Tucker Carlson is positioning himself to run for president in 2028.

Trump will never resign even if he loses both houses and gets impeached. He will fight until he can’t anymore. If he does decide to resign before his end of term, he will blame it on health so he appears to go out on his own terms. I wish he would leave, but don’t see that happening.

I would think all nuclear powers review their options from time to time. This is not much of a news story.

Former Trump ally says any president considering first-use nuclear weapons would be ‘unfit’ for office

I'm afraid I would soil my mind to look on the prediction betting websites to see whether or not you can wager on this 🫠

Hmm, is he really dumb enough to try to make money on whether or not he's crazy enough to use nukes first?

Welp, goodbye Albuquerque*, we could barely spell ya
