IndiGo resumes Siem Reap flights as tourism rebounds

Indian airline IndiGo will reinstate its service between Kolkata and Siem Reap from 1 October, restoring a vital link to Cambodia’s premier tourist destination just in time for the Durga Puja holidays. The route, suspended in March amid geopolitical tensions linked to the war in Iran, will operate three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The return of IndiGo is seen as a boost for Cambodia’s tourism sector, which relies heavily on direct international connections to Angkor Wat. The airline had previously cited weaker demand and rising operational costs for the suspension, but its comeback signals renewed confidence in the route.

Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport, which opened in late 2023, has quickly become a hub for regional and long‑haul carriers. Today, the airport is served by a diverse mix of airlines, ensuring strong connectivity across Asia and beyond.

Airlines currently serving Siem Reap

  • Air Cambodia – domestic and regional routes

  • Cambodia Airways – regional destinations

  • Vietnam Airlines – links to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

  • Thai AirAsia – flights to Bangkok

  • Bangkok Airways – Bangkok–Siem Reap service

  • Thai Airways International – Bangkok connections

  • Emirates – Dubai–Siem Reap route

  • IndiGo – Kolkata service (resuming October)

  • VietJet Air – flights to Vietnam

  • China Eastern Airlines – Shanghai route

  • Lao Airlines – Vientiane service

  • Singapore Airlines – direct flights to Singapore

  • Mahogany Air – regional services

Why it matters

Cambodia’s tourism industry, still recovering from pandemic‑era disruptions, depends on reliable air links. India is a growing source of visitors, and the reinstated Kolkata route is expected to drive arrivals during peak festival season. With 13 airlines now operating, Siem Reap is regaining momentum as a regional gateway for tourism and trade.

The government hopes that increased connectivity will not only boost visitor numbers but also support broader economic growth. For travellers, the return of IndiGo adds another affordable option to reach one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic destinations.
