Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment has revealed that more than 150 natural resource offences were uncovered in protected areas last month, underscoring the scale of ongoing environmental challenges.

In a statement issued on 11 September, officials said 1,256 patrols were carried out nationwide in August, leading to 157 cases being identified — ten more than in July. Forestry crimes made up the largest share, with 67 incidents, followed by 40 wildlife offences, 33 land encroachments, 16 fisheries violations and one mineral resources case.

Authorities reported that 48.37 hectares of protected land had been cleared, with case files covering 20.39 hectares already submitted to the courts. Formal legal action was taken in 69 cases, and six cases involving eight suspects are now before judges.

The ministry emphasised that rangers are working closely with law enforcement and local stakeholders to strengthen protection efforts. Training sessions were also held in Koh Kong, Pailin and Kratie provinces, covering evidence gathering, investigation techniques and money‑laundering offences. A total of 129 officials took part.

Separately, the ministry announced that ROYAL CERA CO., LTD., a ceramic products manufacturer in Kampot province, will remain suspended after inspectors found serious breaches of environmental regulations. The company was operating without an environmental impact assessment or waste discharge permit, and lacked a treatment system for liquid waste.

Despite earlier warnings in August, the firm had failed to comply with legal requirements. It has now been ordered to halt all waste discharge, construct a treatment system, and remove sludge and liquid waste previously dumped at unauthorised sites. A deadline of 22 September has been set for compliance.

Officials said the company had violated multiple articles of the Environment and Natural Resources Code and water pollution control regulations. The case highlights the government’s tougher stance on industrial pollution alongside its broader crackdown on natural resource crimes.
