Thailand's greenhouse gas emissions may reach 80% in the next decade

The Permanent Secretary of Industry reports that Thailand's greenhouse gas emissions over the next 13 years will increase by 80 percent if the nation does not work to reduce oil and energy usage.

Mr. Jaglamon Phasukwanich (จักรมณฑ์ ผาสุกวนิช ) said that unless energy conservation measures are implemented, Thailand's greenhouse gas emissions will reach 80 percent in 2020 due to social, economic, and industrial development. Mr. Jaglamon said that Thailand may have to follow Japan's plan to implement laws to achieve an automobile fuel economy of 3 liters per 100 liters by 2015.

The Permanent Secretary of Industry says that the measures will be necessary if Thailand is unable to locate new deposites of oil and energy in the next decade.

Permanent Secretary for Industry says industrial sector is mainly responsible for greenhouse gas emission

The Permanent Secretary for Industry, Mr. Chakramon Phasukavanich (จักรมณฑ์ ผาสุกวนิช), says the industrial sector is one of the major causes of greenhouse gas emission, and it has lowered the World GDP by three percent.

The Department of Industrial Works organized a seminar on the impact of changing weather condition and the management of greenhouse gas emission in the industrial sector. The seminar was held at the Miracle Grand Convention Hotel in Bangkok today (September 4th), and it was held for relevant units to find ways to prevent greenhouse gas and fluctuating weather from affecting Thailand’s economy and society.

At the seminar, Mr. Chakramon says the industrial sector is mainly responsible for emitting greenhouse gas, both directly and indirectly. He says the production segment of the industrial sector emits the most greenhouse gas as it expands with economic growth. He says greenhouse gas destroys the natural equilibrium and causes global warming.

The Permanent Secretary for Industry says if the global temperature rises by one degree Celsius, the World GDP would reduce by one percent. However, if the temperature rises by five to six degrees Celsius and no actions has been taken to curb this problem, the World GDP would decrease considerably. Moreover, the natural environment and human health would deteriorate, and the developing and under-developed countries would bear the burdents.

His paper would have been written before the sub-prime meltdown was seen to probably result in USA recession, and that that would spread to all industrialised countries.

"May increase by 80%" is now highly unlikely.

It may well decrease as manufacture-for-export pretty well shuts down.

Thai Silp was but a forerunner.
