Thai minister backs civilian govt return

September 11, 2007 - 4:48PM

Thailand's foreign minister supports a return to civilian government, with more checks and balances to ensure the military has no future role in politics.

Thailand's Foreign Affairs Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram said despite decades of political upheaval, which spiked in a military coup last September, the country had never deviated from its aspiration to become fully democratic.

"No one wants the military in government. No one. I'm one of them. I'm civilian," Mr Pibulsonggram told the Asia Foreign Policy Update Luncheon in Melbourne.

With better mechanisms, checks and balances in place, he was hopeful there would be no role for the military in Thailand politics.

It's part of their regular sirupy goulash that they love to give to stupid foreigners, when they travel outside Thailand, in order to make them feel good.

Look at what Suraryud said at Apec summit too : basically the "peace and love, we are a big family" same style.

I'm wondering if foreign authorities are still dupes ?

I know of two ministers, I won't say who, who can't wait to get the hel_l out of dodge and let the monkies back into to the monkey house. I suspect there is more.

Many of them AREN'T politicians, and signed up for a one year tour of duty.

Like father like son, eh? :D

Not necessarily. Believe it or not, sometimes sons have different opinions.

My son likes airplanes, I like cars

My son likes girls, I like girls ... :D

His (pibulsonggram sr. alias luang wichithakarn) regime also embarked upon a course of economic nationalism, in which the Thai people were to support only Thai products and therefore destroy the Chinese hold on the market. Anti-Chinese policies were also undertaken; indeed, in a speech in 1938 Luang Wichitwathakarn compared the Chinese in Siam to the Jews in Germany.
(pibulsonggram sr.) aimed to uplifting the national spirit and moral code of the nation and instilling progressive tendencies and a newness into Thai life

many of them are eminently more qualified technically to take on their respective portfolios than the elected criminal power brokers who stich up seats in parliament and with the backing of 10 lackies demand 'X' ministry (or the whole government falls over) and spend the next 4 years putting their snouts in the trough so they can fund their next stab at parliament (amongst other things).

Can't wait for the election mind you. It will give the whiners here something else to complain about.

i dont know which is the lesser evil for a country - the government that flows from the barrel of a gun - or government elected through a flawed democratic process :o

While I must say that I am a fan of the one year benevolent junta (well maybe just this one), I must agree that the latter option is usually favourable.
