Hello.

A company in Thailand will apply for a work permit in my name, although I believe that a non-immigrant O or B is a requirement for this, and the same company is willing to sponsor me for that visa. If I'm correct, that means I will not have to provide the requirements myself, such as proof of income, etc. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I am unsure the difference between non-immigrant O and B, and exactly which one I should apply for.

Last question, my real question...from Thailand, what is the closest place I can go to get this visa, if I have the corporate sponsorship? And attorney had told me before that its not possible to get in Asia and I must leave the continent to get it. But I have heard its possible to get in Hong Kong, or Maybe Malaysia? With the sponsorship from a Thai corporation, where do I have to go?

Thanks,

Christian

Correct

Also, I am unsure the difference between non-immigrant O and B, and exactly which one I should apply for.

"B" is for business and " O" is for 'Other" It does not matter which non immigrant visa you get.. "B" or "O", both will allow you to get a work permit.

You cannot get a multiple entry visa based on business in most countries in Asia, unless you have a work permit. You can however in some Asia countries get a 90 day visa and this will be ok to get the wp.

But where can I go without leaving Asia, that I can get a 1 year non-immigrant visa?

Get a 90 day visa at a Thai Embassy/Consulate. Apply for the wp and then apply in Penang for the one year multi entry visa, if your copany does not meet the criteria for you to get the extension of stay permit based on business. Its a two trip process in Asia to get the one year multi entry visa based on having a wp.

Ok, well I'm a little confused about what makes it 2 trips, unless you're counting the 90 day visa as the first trip.

Right now I have a 90 day. Its actually the 2 month Tourist Visa (from Laos), and I've just extended it for 30 days at the Immigration Office. So I'm good for another month in Thailand.

So at this point, are you saying that my company should apply for a work permit based on my current visa, before I apply for the 1 year?

If so, what will I need to take with me to Penang to apply for the 1 year visa? Just copies of the wp application, even if it hasn't been approved yet?

I'm also a little confused about why it doesn't matter if I get an O or B. Because how can I be sponsored by a company for the non-immigrant 1 year visa if its not a B type for business? If I choose the O type, then I would have to provide all the credentials and requirements on my own, and not mention anything about the wp, right...or?

Please help me to understand this, and your suggestions for the best thing to do.

You state you have a tourist visa and are currently in Thailand. That visa will not qualify you for a WP. You must leave Thailand and obtain a non immigrant visa ( B or O) and return to Thailand to apply for a WP.

Yes, that is my understanding. And its the reason for my original question, which I still don't have an answer for.

If I need a 1 year non-immigrant visa in order to apply for a work permit, where in Asia can I go for that? What embassy will give 1 year visa's without having to go back to my own country across the pond to get it? HK? Penang? I have heard you can't do this in Asia. I hope that's not true.

And what paperwork is required for that? If I'm being sponsored by a corporation for the 1 year visa, wouldn't it have to be a non-immigrant B type, for a business sponsorship? (It sounds like you're saying I can still apply for a WP on an O type, but then I would have to supply my own credentials to get approved for the visa if I'm not being sponsored, so I think I would apply for the B type in that case, correct?)

It sounded like Sun-Belt Asia had replied that I can apply for a work permit with my 90 day visa. So that isn't true? A 1 year visa is required even to apply for a WP? Or is it that a 1 year visa is required in order to be approved for the WP?

Also what will it cost to get the 1 year visa?

I need to figure out what to do and where to go before mid-october, when my current visa expires. Please clarify these issues the best you can.

I don't think you need a multi-one year non-imm visa to apply for a WP. You should only need a single entry non-imm, and you can apply for a WP during during your 90 day stay. But need to be quick as it takes quite a while (usually more than 30 days, at best) to process a WP application.

Yes, it can a bit tricky to obtain even a single entry non-imm in SE Asian countries. Can't comment on the easiest 'local' countries to try.
