Letter to The Editor,

RE : Phuket Air Crash

I live about 7 or so kilometers, "as the crow flies" southeast from the Phuket Airport

Yesterday ( Sunday, Sept 16th ) at around 3 : 30 pm I was running around frantically, shutting all the windows in my home because rain was screaming in horizontally from every direction. The clouds covering the entire south west portion of the sky were the blackest I'd ever seen.

I am certified to fly a small plane so when I heard a jet liner go by, I thought to myself, even in Thailand where there is absolutely no regard for human safety, where parents routinely clutch infants with one arm while steering a motorcycle with the other - even here, the airport would be shut down during such a weather front as this one moving in. Surely that plane is being re-routed.

I was wrong.

I hope that those people who have lost loved ones from this tragedy do not settle with compensation from the Airline, 1-2 Go.

Phuket Airport should have been closed for at least 2 hours during that weather front and the authorities need to be held accountable.

One possible explanation is that the storm, which sounds unusually strong, may have been very sudden and they may not have known it was going to be so strong.

It's terribly sad and yes there is a disregard for safety and life sometimes, but airlines usually have a bit of a higher standard (I hope) than motorcycle drivers--or bus drivers.

It would be horrible to think that this was preventable and nothing was done.

I'm not sure if another thread is ongoing for this subject but speculating etc is not good & could be stepping onto dodgy ground for this right now. Until the facts are known I for one will keep my opinion to myself.

Using it as an opportunity to knock Thailand to a Thai isn't going to go anywhere. Could have worded it much more positively and maybe even got a reply.

even in Thailand where there is absolutely no regard for human safety,

Implies they are like that everywhere. It would be a surprise if this letter is published.

I would shred it straight away, not even reading past the quoted sentence.

After reading the blog, I am even more convinced the letter won't be published anywhere.

I lived on Phuket for nearly 5 years. September is always a bad month for weather and i've seen some pretty horrific sudden weather happen there. 7km is far enough away to experience a completely different set of weather conditions. This proves nothing.

As its been said, the evidence from the black box will shed more light on what really happened that day, until then speculation is merely that, speculation.

l think it's a liitle early to be pointing fingers, maybe waiting until the full facts are available would be more

The tone of his letter seems to be "I'm a farang and I have a PPL, therefore my opinion is most important". He goes on to request that his letter be published on as many forums as possible, including those where he is banned, so that the world will know the truth..

Not just a crank, but a self important crank with no manners and no tact or dimplomacy.
