OxfordWill Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Ok amd athlon xp dual hdd non sata. Successfully installed ubuntu 2.6.20 But no usb mouse So tried ubuntu 7, but get the famous 'cant access tty' while the 7 live cd boots up to install, so I dont even get into the cd bootable version. So I cant install. So I tried the alternative version text installer, installed OK but then doesnt boot into ubuntu because of the same tty error. My problem is I want to use ubuntu 7! Does anyone have experience (please dont refer me to the ubuntu forums I have tried it). I am thinking just to go back to debian. Why did I leave in the first place?
RKASA Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Or you can try PClinuxOS 2007. but for the Lexmark printers which most don't work on any linux anyway I have yet to find anything not working, and it was easy to set up. even I did it. If you need Thai lang support then Kanotix-th-2006-02-15 was real nice and boot options are KDE thai or KDE english it fired right up everything connected itself, no problem. Package is loaded iso was about 700mb.
OxfordWill Posted September 22, 2007 Author Posted September 22, 2007 Thanks for the reply. I was wanting to try out ubuntu. I got it working by editing the menu.1st to point to the correct drive. But it just got worse with gpu problems. I moved back to debian
ajarnmark Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I installed Ubuntu 7.04, working fine, except for there was a small problem with gpu recently. I believe that it can be fixed easily. So I recommend to use it, as it is good, at least so far, and very similar to windows.
OxfordWill Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 In the interests of conclusions, I tried ubuntu again with intrepid (8.10) and so far, its working great. Im sometimes annoyed at the subtle differences between debian and ubuntu but I think theyre just born out of habit changing and not any real fault with ubuntu, which now seems to do exactly what it says on the tin. I think this distro is possibly gonna do wonders for linux reputation.
Richb2004v2 Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 My Linux problems are documented in this forum over the past few months. I have finally settled on the latest version of Ubuntu, 9.04. Everything is working fine for me. At the minute no problems at all.

I have 9.04 because with it everything works. Even with 8.10 I had problems. It is a beta, but I don't see any problems with it at all so far. I don't know what will actually change when it is officially released.

I think I will stick with PClinuxOS 2009.1 and Backtrack3 they work well for me.
livinthailandos Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Dear userabcd on a unrelated issue can you give me some idea of your experience with backtrack, I do realize what it is though, am downloading it already. on this forum about ubuntu, after using it for one year 8.10 I still had to go about getting wireless working for my labtop, it didn't work. I have heard linux mint has better experience with recognizing hardware though. you can always try that
